After every flight, Qantas Airlines pilots fill out a form called a gripe sheet, which conveys to the mechanics problems encountered with the aircraft during the flight that need repair or correction. The mechanics read and correct the problem, and then respond in writing on the lower half of the form what remedial action was taken, and the pilot reviews the gripe sheets before the next flight. Never let it be said that ground crews and engineers lack a sense of humor.
Here are some supposedly actual logged maintenance complaints and problems as submitted by Qantas pilots and the solution as recorded by Qantas maintenance engineers.
By the way, Qantas is the only major airline that has never had an accident.
(P = The problem logged by the pilot.)
(S = The solution and action taken by the engineers.)

P: Left inside main tyre almost needs replacement.
S: Almost replaced left inside main tyre.

P: Test flight OK, except auto-land very rough.
S: Auto-land not installed on this aircraft.

P: Something loose in cockpit.
S: Something tightened in cockpit.

P: Dead bugs on windshield.
S: Live bugs on backorder.

P: Autopilot in altitude-hold mode produces a 200 feet per minute descent.
S: Cannot reproduce problem on ground.

P: Evidence of leak on right main landing gear.
S: Evidence removed.

P: DME volume unbelievably loud.
S: DME volume set to more believable level.

P: Friction locks cause throttle levers to stick.
S: That's what they're there for.

P: IFF inoperative.
S: IFF always inoperative in OFF mode.

P: Suspected crack in windshield.
S: Suspect you're right.

P: Number 3 engine missing.
S: Engine found on right wing after brief search.

P: Aircraft handles funny.
S: Aircraft warned to straighten up, fly right, and be serious.

P: Target radar hums.
S: Reprogrammed target radar with lyrics.

P: Mouse in cockpit.
S: Cat installed.

P: Noise coming from under instrument panel. Sounds like a midget pounding on something with a hammer.
S: Took hammer away from midget

These are funny!

I fly Qantas as they are who our FF points are with. They have fabulous ground & booking/check-in crew but their in-air personnel are my least favourite out of all the airlines I've flown. Rude, obnoxious, condescending and clearly not interested in passenger comfort - many of them aren't even civil. In the last 20+ flights with them, I've had a total of three cabin crew who were friendly.

that is not neccessarily an official Quantas bit of info.

I've worked over 14 years of aviation (particularly for UAL) I've seen that list in one form or another and with more than one livery.

I have worked on Quantas 747's.. I don't recall having too many problems with much... unlike some 3rd and 4th world country "airlines"/"cattle cars" which were rode hard and rode again and then maybe put away wet.

i dislike flying so my deal is i will not bother you and have very few requests and you act professionally and just get me there

so far - so good and no complaints

my fav so far has been continental staff (both checkin and flight crew) for the cairns/guam/palau/yap/guam/cairns flights.... couldnt fault them

within australia ive only ever flown Qantas but NEVER JetStar, which is owned by Qantas (affectionally known as crapstar or pornstar by the locals)

On my trips to Australia, I've used Virgin Blue when traveling within the country. Although they have a rather skimpy baggage allowance (20 kg TOTAL, which BTW they waive if one of the bags contains "sporting equipment" like scuba gear), I've had nothing but extremely friendly service from them. And their prices have (in the 6 flights I've taken with them) matched if not beat JetStar's, with more available flights for the price.

I've only used Continental once, but the service was also good.

we will be testing out virgin for the first time in october when we go for a dive trip to Tasmania :multi:

i was going to take a qantas flight BUT qantas have this habit of canning that flight and shoving everyone on a CrapStar flight instead so instead of risking it we thought we would go with Virgin for the 1st time.

and yes - already printed out the sportsgear allowance clause for checkin.... looking forward to a good flight!

I'm so glad I read this as I take my first flight on Qantas in 3 days. :11:

LOL they'll get you where you're going and, knock wood, haven't lost any of my luggage.

The food hasn't been bad lately.

The movies have SUCKED - and that's assuming the entertainment system is actually working (3/5 flights yes recently - but not on the two longest legs!)

However, they have beat the snot out of every single piece I have ever checked with them. Three trips ago I bought a big bad bag that was recommended by one of my friends who's had one for years and been everywhere. They destroyed it. I was not amused.
