Just my two cents... I have a lot of my customers who are very happy with the merino lined 5mm wetsuits from Pinnacle. they are diving in the Great Lakes from May until end of October with the suit and in the colder waters adding a hooded vest. In florida and north carolina they are often diving that suit with just a scubado rag as a hood and I myself dive anything north of the caymans in a 5mm.

If it colder the active customers are going with a drysuit. I know it is expensive but with those two suits you can dive anywhere in the world and be pretty happy.

I stopped buying 7mm suits when I got my drysuit and most of my customers are of the same opinion.

We can also help you if you want to check out the website, we have sizing charts and prices on our online store. I think there is a pinnacle dealer in your area too... always best to shop at your Local Dive center.

Hope this helps

Get a cheap wetsuit for the tropics and save up for a drysuit. You can get a nice used drysuit for 5-800. Once you go dry...

IMO You might also want to check out a 7mil semi dry for diving up here. Not as expensive as a drysuit and better than a regular wetsuit. Especially if you have to layer 2 x 7mils. Nothing like moving like the Michelen Man. :) It is sealed quite well at the neck, wrist, and ankle which helps keep you dry and will also help on your SI to keep your core temp up for the next dive.

The water temps in Lake Huron and Lake Michigan get as low as 42 at depth even in the summer.
So, definately invest in a GOOD hood. A hooded vest is best but, either will make a huge difference as you loose the most heat from your noggin. I tried to dive Lake Huron once in a 5 mil hood and couldn't get past 50 feet without getting a splitting headache from the cold.

Hope that helps a bit!

I agree. Get a dry, you won't be sorry.

While I agree that a drysuit is the way to go, since the OP was trying to save some $$ by getting one wetsuit (admirable attempt) I think he/she might pass out after seeing the price of a drysuit (I was speechless for a moment when I found out how much the DUI TLS 350 costs) :11:

But worth every penny whenever you're in "cool" water!:dork2:

Oh I know, and it's why I'm saving up until October when DUI is having a demo day near me. I plan to get a custom tailored one.

While most everyone agrees that DUI makes terrific suits, not everyone needs to spend that much dough. There are plenty of less-expensive quality suits out there: Whites, BARE, USIA to name a few.
