Kathy,

I'm turning green with envy, I am speechless... You look awesome in your gear.... :)

MG

Mike don't turn green! I know you have time off so don't hesitate! Buy a 3mm or bring a 5mm & hop a stand-by flight to Bali for July 30th or Aug 1st if you can get the cheap family deal!

These pictures are really nothing compared to what I am seeing - If you only knew how awesome it really is some days !!!

I'll meet you at the airport & guide both above and below water :D! Return flight should be Aug 11th. In Bali at my secret spot, rooms are $5, dives $6, food $1-$2.50 a meal! Then we can splurge on Mola Mola & Manta spotting dives ;-)! Can't wait to see the Liberty wreck lit up with your 21W HID :D!

If you can make it earlier on the 20-21st of July please join me in Komodo for world class jaw dropping - thrilling current diving!

Mike, if you have the time off & can catch the cheap flight - you'd be CRAZY to say no!

Kathy - I'm not green with envy, just glad someone is diving even if I can't. :depressed:

Pics look amazing and you look so relaxed. Thanks for allowing me to live vicariously through your diving.

Kathy....I am going to have to pick your brain about Bali when you get back because after 3 weeks in Thailand this year, I am thinking it will be 2 weeks in Bali next year. So, bring back lots of information :D.....maybe you'll even get a referral fee from the places ;).

You are killing us all with your stories and especially the pictures. I think it is safe to say you are living our dream right now.

Dive safe and report often.

In transit in Kuala Lumpur. Tomorrow a new adventure begains - Imagine arriving alone in Banda Ache without reservations. Today van, plane, bus, taxi. Tomorrow, taxi, plane, bemo, boat, bemo - sigh then new dive site. Have heard the internet is spotty so might be out for a while. Mysterious dive site I have heard it's a hidden gem! Lots of underwater canyons and spectacular geology chance to see mantas, etc. And cheap palm tree bungalows!

Ahh life is tough! Will try to be in touch & take lots of pictures ;-)

Have a great time at ITK those who are going!

If there is one thing I have learned through spontaneous travel - its not to force plans. Often better to just go with the flow.

A growing uneasiness about the Sumatra plans, friendly warnings from friends, a dive partner canceling, difficulty booking the ticket, missing my wake up call & waking up at 11am today (when I always wake up by 7am) missed the flight, all flights are booked till next Monday. Of course I could go to another airline, take a different route - impose my plan.

But at some point when so many details conspire to keep you from your goal - I think it better to just go with the flow.

Humm here I sit in the hub of the cheapest airline in SE Asia... where else would I like to dive??? Decisions, decisions. Its sad to let the adventure in Sumatra go but ya know I really miss Manado and Lembeh Straights. So many cool exotic critters - like a time out from the action adrenlin diving for a marine biology lesson. Such a strange world with tweeky fish geek photographers and really weird marine life. The perfect environment to test the buoyancy/trim and fine tune kicking & practice that elusive back kick in a fun environment where its much needed. Get out the magnifying glass, fish ID books, practice shallow breaths and flawless hovers, cause the critters might just be 1/8 inch :D!

As soon as I mentioned the decision and not forcing the flow, suddenly the rock solid customer service agent who assured me she couldn't refund any of my ticket, smiled and started with creative keyboard clicking. Within a few minutes the tickets to Manado were booked with a very small balance to pay! Ah and I found a great resort that just so happens to have vacancies for my exact time requirement ;-)!

Ahh off to hunt for the elusive Mimic octopus! And tweek out staring cross eyed at sea fans for pigmy seahorses. (oh did I mention I found my first pigmy seahorse in Anilao the other day - yes I found it!!!)

Now my growing uneasiness has melted into a a smile.

Honestly, after Coron Wrecks and the currents of Anilao a break from intensity is a welcome thought. I need the vacation fom my vacation! Now a break from challenging diving to focus on technique for a few -then heading to the dramatic Komodo underwater dreamscape with raging current!

Banda Ache - Sumatra - well hopefully I will see it some other day. Now on to the best Muck diving in the world!!! :D :D Can't wait for the night diving! Oh how I wish I had a great camera!

If I get lucky I can snag some pics from another photographer and post awesome shots here! :D

Hey Kathy, how many dives you did since 31/5 ? How much cash you`ve spent so far?

ty

Hi there,

I have now done 58 dives since I arrived on June 2nd, but had 7 days out of the water with swimmers ear and a few days of transit here an there. Honestly the overall cost is not something I've kept track of. I really don't want to know ;). If I guessed I'd say it is around $1,300 - $1,500 per month, but used a $36 frequent flyer ticket to get here which really kept the cost down. I hit 5 different sites in the Philippines and one of those I returned to three times. It is often the connecting flights and transportation to/from that adds costs. Staying in one place for a while has its benefits. For example I met a guy in Coron Bay who rented a room monthly for $80 US a month & ate for about $3 a day. His dives were $20 each. The longer you stay in a place the more ways you learn to save $. Personally, if I were him, I'd splurge and spend $40 more to exit the mildew covered basement & add windows and perhaps a kitchen to my apartment - but add hot water/ac you pay a premium ;-).

If I had booked flights earlier I could have saved a few hundred dollars - instead I have been traveling on impulse so pay the budget premium. Also I have splurged here and there on nicer accomodations so not entirely doing the budget thing.

For example today I planed to go to Sumatra with $3 rooms and $24 dives - instead I am about to book at a mid level resort with hot water in Lembeh for 9 nights which will be about $110 per day all inclusive and include 3 dives a day. Ouch!

Lembeh is not really a budget place but for your money you get world class muck diving - some things are worth paying for. $110 per day for a resort & 3 dives is not really that expensive, but multiply that by 11 weeks! Bali by comparison can be very inexpensive - (things always get much cheaper when you know the locals). Dove a great resort in Anilao for a very reasonable price with a locals discount & spent a week at a friends house for free.

If you are thinking about a similar trip I can deffinately suggest the least expensive places and some ways to make your $ stretch. I have learned spending $3-$7 more a dive for a shop that maintains its equpiment and hires skilled guides is a VERY good investment.

The cheapest diving does not = the best deal in the scuba world!!!

Also in off season you can sometimes bargain. I just had the lembeh resort discount my stay $25 per night. I can recommend the places that are cheaper to dive, but truthfully - I am pretty happy I do not have any accouting for the trip :D.

Ah Steve, I wish you could be here to share some of this beauty. Of course travel advice is free! Perhaps someday this thread will inspire a future partner for the next fun scuba adventure! 1 month this year between mid Dec/Jan ? :D

Everything - especially scuba diving is always better when you share it with a great partner!

WOOOOOW!

Kathy, if you had thought it through, this could have been one heck of a docu-drama!

What a great lifetime of experiences you must be having! Jealous? Yeah, I can say I am envious of the time you are having... Make the most of it!

Wow, this thread is getting epic. Please keep posting.

I thought that I had a tough life diving Monterey twice a week, but you really kick my butt!
