    Dual Agency

The Self Reliant Course is not a "Solo" course. It teaches the same principles of redundancy, etc. but still requires you to dive with a buddy. The idea here was simply to help divers (especially those without set buddies) hone their skills. At least this was my understanding. ---------- Post...

    Dual Agency

This thread is aimed at the dive shop community: I have recently been approached by a number of agencies to become a trainer and to have my shop associate with them. I have been a PADI member for almost 15 years and have had few complaints, but my business partner and I have been considering...

    Looking for a used housing.

My wife and I have a Canon Rebel T3 and are buying a 5D body. We're newly married and buying a house soon, so we're perpetually broke. That said, I really want to surprise her for our anniversary with a housing for one of these systems. Does anyone out there have a used housing that they are...

    Mt. Storm Closure?

While planning a trip to Mt Storm one of my Divemasters came across the Dominion and WV-DNR websites that still maintain a no shore diving stance. I contacted Mr Ford, the current director of the Mt Storm Power Station today. He shot back a quick response stating that the matter will be...

Ease of use Atom 2.0 vs 3.0 vs OC1 vs VT4

I picked up the VT4 back in June when they first came out and have logged about 40 dives or so on it. Absolutely love it! Very easy to read and understand and best of all the compass actually works almost like an analog (in some ways better). The VT4 compass is built on a 3-axis system as...

    Console vs Air Integrated

Some of these replys would lead me to believe that the poster has only ever read/ heard about AI computers. Modern computers are very reliable and no better/ worse than analog SPGs. I reccommend that you check each brand you're interested in as some have problems, but I have used at least...

    Shallow Erie Wrecks

Looking to introduce myself and my customers with Lake Erie diving this summer. I am strictly recreational and would prefer to stay above 100', but primarily in the 40-80 foot range. Are there any good sites wrecks or other that people could reccommend? Shallowest I've seen is about 80' on...

    dive computer with integrated compass

Jim, I have not used any Uwatec digital compasses and therefore did not even mention them. It was not my intention to bash or preach, simply to give my opinion of models I have actually had experience with. I don't appreciate your attack. MC, In reality, I don't use a compass much...

    dive computer with integrated compass

The best compass I've seen so far is on the Icon HD from Mares. This is the only one I'd really rely on for course plotting and serious navigation. Play with as many as you can, but realize most will not perform as good as a seperate compass. -Jeff

    Headache after diving?? WTF

One question not asked or answered yet: Do you smoke? I had a student a while back who surfaced with bad headaches especially in higher altitudes. Through talking to him and consulting dive-MDs, we deduced that his chain smoking combined with being overweight and out of shape was causing CO2...

    Are rashguards worth having?

A rash guard is supposed to fit snug. That being said, I am an odd shaped person (Short and chubby) My L/S shirt does bunch a little so I make sure I try to pull any excess into the bicep area on my arms. Being fair skinned, I rarely dive wet without some type of rash guard, but you need to...

    water in my ear or....?

Call the doc. Ear infections get bad quick and are painful if not treated right away. I ignored the first one I got because I didn't regognize the symptoms and paid for it for weeks. Also, since your stuck at work, ask DAN - https://www.diversalertnetwork.org/

    scuba/free diving computer

I personally don't know of any non- nitrox computers, but I second the GEO. I used the air integrated version (Oceanic Atom 2) and thought it was really nice. The battery is very easy to replace in about a minute. Oceanic just switched over to the GEO 2, so you can prob find last years...

    Rubber Masks (not silicone)

If you can, have him try out a Mares liquid skin. They are 40% softer than standard silicone. This might help with his comfort issue. I find that the Star LiquidSkin fits 99% of all the faces who try it on, but there are also the X-Vision (available w/ Rx Lenses) and Essence (Frameless) masks...

    Regulator Use in Cold Water

    Looking for first regulator

I know I'm incredibly Biased as I sell Oceanic, but in a feature to feature comparison the EOS shines. As others have mentioned, the more compact FDX10 1st stage is an environmentally sealed Balanced Diaphram (currently the only one reccomended for use by the NOAA) It is widely serviceable and...

What's the point of these 3 gas computers?

I am NOT a tech diver, but hope to be in the future. I AM an Oceanic dealer, so I will only speak to the first quote. The current model of the VT3 uses Pelagic's standard recreational "DeSAT" Algorithm. I emphasize Pelagic, because it is their "aggressive algorithm". Oceanic's newest model...

    A spearfishing mask for scuba?

Well put Messier42, I personally dive with a Mares Star, another 'freediving' mask. I found that I barely noticed any loss in feild of view, but the benefits were amazing. Super lightweight, very easy to equalize and clear, and really comfortable. Above all the last is what you need to be...

    Gloves: Waterproof or 4th Element

I use the dry 5 myself, and as long as you make sure the seal is flat all around, you will have no problems. In regards to the squeeze as Jim said, the neoprene is so soft that although you can see the squeeze when you look at them, you won't feel it.

    Vyper air or VT3 ?

I don't know of any problems syncing an Oceanic computer with the wrong transmitter. They come programmed with the serial # of the transmitter so that this scenario wont happen. They also come with a "Buddy Check" function that gives you the ability to read each other's air pressure. You'd...
