The funniest surcharge I’ve ever seen is in Argentina. The restaurants charge you for the utensils.
I think "cubierto" in Argentina derives more closely from "cover," as in a "cover charge" for sitting at the table, than "cubiertos"--utensils. Remember, in Italy the cover charge for the table is a "coperto." A lot of Italian influence in Argentina.

In Croatia a lot of menus have free utensils on them, implying that somewhere, sometimes it was a normal surcharge.

Hey now, you don't need to look far at all for surcharges. A friend of mine just picked up a take-out lunch and when he got back and looked at the tab there was an "employee retention" charge of 3% tacked on at the bottom of the check after tax! He's like what the heck is this? Well, if the establishment has to pay its employees more but doesn't want to raise menu prices it puts a tiny little notice in micro print on the bottom of the menu and their online ordering website that due to labor shortages and our desire to maintain our quality staff we must assess a 3% labor retainage surcharge. Ever heard of such a thing? Most people just grab their $8 lunch and toss the receipt without ever looking at it. Kind of reminds me of how a $39/month cell phone plan somehow turns into $49 a month. LOL!

What most people like about uber/lyft is that you know the exact fare before you confirm the request.
Cozumel: ¿Cuánto cuesta? (know the exact fare) before you get in the cab (confirming the request) Same…but with a more personal touch. :bounce::bounce::bounce::)

The wife bought 2 waters at 7-11 yesterday that were listed “2 for 25 pesos”. Cashier said $2 USD and the wife paid it.

We both went in there today to buy them again and the same clerk now said $1.50 USD. I looked at the wife and told her to just pay it, I need to get to the cougar.

Quit using USD in Cozumel.

Not really the same and the "personal touch" is what is desired to avoid.

Lol…interfacing with phones & keyboards gets mundane & boring. Actual people are far more entertaining & rewarding. 😄 I’ve had pretty good luck with cabs in Coz. I would focus more on the airline luggage scales…and all those kids on my lawn.:wink:

I don't take taxis to find excitement and meet people but to get from point A to point B. I'll save my interactions with people for another time.
