All this posturing on which deco model is the best is very interesting, but I often have to wait whilst the Shearwater computers end their deco so I can surface. Last dive today it was 2 minutes. I dive a EON Steel Black with factory settings.

If the model was so bad there would be hundreds of DCI cases, where are they?
 
The issue isn't their conservatism(you can make Buhlmann GF as conservative as you like) but the fact that they're proprietary and unpublished. There's no way of knowing what they will do, or why. They've come up with half a dozen versions of "Suunto RGBM" over the years, without ever showing how any of them relate to the actual RGBM algorithm.
It’s when diving with others that the proprietary algorithms are a nause, especially if you’ve finally bought a decent computer (Perdix) and have the Suunto as a backup. Seems that the proprietary algorithm wants more time if doing an hour of deco — 10 minutes more than GF 50:80. Your Perdix saying "deco clear" and the Suunto forcing you to decide to wait another 10 mins or ignore it and brick it for two days.

Oh, the hilarious thing is after doing the deco it them asks for a further 3 mins "safety stop"!

Really depends on conservatism settings rather than the algorithm. I can make many NDL dives into Deco dives by swinging the GF into very conservative parameters. I don't dive with it set so conservative, but it is possible. Without knowing what the Shearwater computers were set to, it's impossible to know why you had to wait on them.

Agreed. I don't believe there are any truly bad algorithms out there. Some are better than others, but for the most part, they all work to get a diver from depth safely to the surface. I do like the open source nature of Buhlmann. I can do land-based planning in Subsurface, and as long as I use the same settings, can expect the same result from my Perdix. I wouldn't be able to do that with a Suunto to my knowledge. I would likely have to plan on the DC itself, which is often limiting.
 
You don't have the whole picture or the correct understanding of the details. Suunto did NOT expose you to any danger, to the contrary, it was too protective and conservative; it certainly did not "screw you." The computer would get you up to the surface during the dive, it won't abandon you. If you miss a required deco stop, it will keep beeping and blinking at you the whole time with arrows pointing down. It will do everything possible to get you to go down to your stop except hitting you on the head or pushing you down. If you still ignore all of the warnings and alerts and proceed to the surface, the Suunto computer will not allow you to go down for another dive for 48 hours (I think) which is very prudent and conservative. It will work as a depth gauge timer if you go down again before the 48 hours are over.

Most dive computers in the recreational diving realm are the same more or less.
My fiancés eon core locked her out on a dive because the battery was getting low…after we charged it for a bit it was still locked out. I sold them immediately afterwards and got shearwaters.
 
I wouldn’t hesitate using a Suunto if I needed to, or a G2 (a nice computer and I’ve been very tempted by the HUD) the, or better, A reason for shearwater is cross compatibility or transmitters if you already have a PPS transmitter (talking rec divers) but reality is few people switch computers very often, a Suunto pod is compatible with several form factor computers within the brand, same with scubapro. The Garmin G2 is a tempting option now days but it’s a bit more limited in back up options.

I don't know the particulars of your incident but all other dive computers I know of, lock you out if the battery is running low at a certain level.

What do you mean by talking rec divers?
