Finishing up a week of diving. The reef appears to be in pretty good shape. Water temps seem a little low for this time of year, lots of 80 degree dives some 83's but also some 78's. Pretty consistent upwelling of water from the channel, typically at 80 to 110 ', thermoclines with visual shimmers. Above and on the reef medium to poor viability, below the thermocline excellent viability, the upwelling seems to be causing crazy currents with most dives going backwards but often reversing mid dive, sometimes rather abruptly. This seems to churn a lot of the debris in the shallows and on the reef causing some of the poor visability.
Lionfish populations do not seem to have increased and to myself they seem at or below pre-covid shutdown levels. I noticed that while I did see small ones I expected to see more juveniles but as I have noticed over the last several years their numbers seem to be declining. I think something is eating either the eggs or the small fry, a good thing.
In town the tourist areas are beginning to open but the businesses are doing a very reduced business. I was told by a restuarant owner that initially they were making it on delivery but as the economic collapse has continued the local people no longer spend money or simply no longer have any. The retired expats still have an income stream but most local folks have none. Many of the dive shops have reduced the trip rate for captains and DM's as the post covid restrictions no longer make the pre-covid model economically viable. At least one shop hasn't paid its crews in about three weeks. Pemex still wants close to $4 a gallon and CFE's electrical rates are still very high and they will not extend payments or offer relief. A quiet desperation can be seen back in the neighborhoods but I am impressed that they have retained their dignity, crime is still low but as one local guy noted it's hard to be a burglar when everyone is home. With no meaningful government relief or income they are holding up much better then I would expect in the '1st' world countries.
I am glad I came and hope to be back next month. Cozumel truly needs even the limited economic input the divers bring

Agree 100%. Just got back from 12 day trip & everyone (dive crew, resort staff, taxi drivers, etc) were all very thankful for the business & tips. Hope to go again in the next few months.

I'm glad to hear Cozumel is open for business. My live-aboard for Egypt next week just got unconfirmed due to cancellations and I'm thinking of heading to Cozumel instead. I'm already reserved to go in October, but why not go within the next week or two, as well?

Anyone know if the Scuba Club Cozumel is open?

Last I heard, SCC was still closed , but that info is a month old. Hopefully someone here has more info.

Have you tried calling them?

Someone in another thread said they were open “yesterday”. Can’t recall which thread though....

They moved the Search feature so this was not easy. Here are the most recent posts about Scuba Club.

Casa Mexicana was closed. Scuba Club closed. Cozumel Palace opened. Presidente open.

Is Scuba Club currently open or any news or information?

There web page isn't posting any Covid info?

SCC isn't open yet.

I did. No answer. There is nothing on their website saying they are closed, but the no answer thing makes me think they may not be open. I was hoping someone here might know. I'll send an email next.
