Isn't this a pretty good argument for looking at a diaphragm 1st stage instead of a piston 1st?

Perhaps if it were a real argument.

All the hogs I got rooked into buying were crap.
That's a pretty broad and fuzzy statement. Care to substantiate it?

Hogs are cheap crap regs. People only like them because they are cheap or like to do their own service, or both. All the hogs I got rooked into buying were crap.

I have never had an issue with them and other than you I have not heard of anyone else having an issue with them. Actually they are rock solid regs of the exact same design as many other regs. So maybe it was the user moreso than the reg.

I forgot one other detail: can a transmitter be fitted to either of these 1st stages? I know it gets tight for some 1st stages and sometimes an interconnect is provided.

Look out for the short hose argument, lol!
Since I use a 6" hose, I know it works on both regs. From the looks of the body, I don't see an impediment to a direct mount, but I'll defer to someone who uses it that way. I'd you don't get an answer, PM me and I'll mount mine directly and confirm. Or I'll do it tonite if I remember and let you know. :)

I'm not an expert on regulators. Care to elaborate?

I bought 4 hog regs (piston) brand new out of the box for my wife and I's doubles. All 4 (literally all 4) straight out of the box were defective. As soon as you pressurized the regs, they would blow hp air out of the top of the reg (where the adjustment area would be on the top of a mk25) and shoot the plastic cap 20 feet away. I called Edd who I bought them from and he actually didn't believe me. I sent them back and he witnessed it himself. He "serviced" them and said that he thought it was a bad oring. Within 2 dives they started doing it again so he gave me my money back and never could tell me what the issue was. Several friends and acquaintances have hogs and all have had issues such as IP creep that they haven't had with other better quality regs. The general assumption among people I know if their hogs are cheap, so nice to have, but don't expect them to last and don't rely on them if you drop a stage bottle and come back to it a couple of days later.

Maybe they've gotten better since they raised their prices, but in my opinion you get what you pay for.

I prefer piston regs but I do like the MK 17 and have thought of buying another one if I could come up with a reason, with 7 Atomic which are all sealed I’m having trouble with the justification. I seal my Atomics to reduce the chance of scoring the piston mating surface from shore grit even though it takes a lot of years to wear out something like the MK 25 from shore diving, I used one for 10 years before it started really showing the wear, still worked perfectly. I like the lite weight and corrosion resistance of the “T” series atomics.
