Apparently the port was closed today due to wind and waves... Typically, what would the wind speeds be for the port to close? Two days were blown out when I was there in Dec... No harm done as we went diving in the cenotes instead but would be good to know...

Port WAS NOT closed yesterday or the day before! Cozumel Insider is OFTEN incorrect and the author is not on the island unless she has a local reporter now. They are way off base today too - says port is closed today as well and that we have heavy rain and strong gusty winds - FALSE on all accounts!

Port was closed Tuesday afternoon and Wednesday, that was it! \not even sure why it was closed Wednesday all day - sea was really calm and it was overcast with just a few light showers during the day.

We had absolutely NO damage or effects from Ernesto! It was a GORGEOUS day on the island - sunny and blue skies with a couple of very short isolated quick showers!

Are you sure? The airport there says the winds were out of the East and ESE, so the island should have sheltered the reef - and the strongest noted was 14 mph, if those records are correct.

Winds out of the NE or SW are the ones that affect the reef area the most. Small boats get grounded first, depending on speed and direction of wind and waves.

Incorrect Don - strong west, NW and north winds are the ones that give us trouble - no "set" wind speed to close port

Nah, Ernie gave a close one but a miss. TD7 failed, and Invest 93l is lost, headed toward Iceland maybe - or Spain. I'm looking forward to coming to Coz to cool off next week. It would be nice to see a little rain, before I forget what it looks like.

A tornado is like a .22 bullet. A direct hit is bad but the odds are against it. A hurricane (cat 4 or 5 anyway) is a nuke. And there are tornados spinning off hurricanes too.

Maybe they are broader, but no where near as powerful. A category 5 Hurricane is around 150 mph wind speeds. A category 5 tornado can reach wind speeds of 300 mph +. Truth be told, I don't want a part of either one of them.

A cat 5 is 165 sustained with 200 + mph gusts. Get the hell out of Dodge if one is coming your way.

Yes, actually I do, and I like her! I rented my first apartment from Sherry when I moved to the island before building my house. I also refer people for her villa rentals and I have contributed on her web page in the past for dive reports!

Sherry and her SO left the island about 2 years ago due to unfortunate circumstances mostly out of her control - she is missed on the island. There are several things on the website that are out of date. I am not sure who is doing the local updates on her website, but they clearly are not physically on the island!

As far as reporting weather conditions - there's a BIG difference in PREDICTING weather forecasts and reporting CURRENT weather conditions which is where CI reports are completely inaccurate!

Current ACTUAL weather in Cozumel is partly cloudy with short isolated showers, mild seas, mild wind from the SE, HOT and port is OPEN! It's been open since Thursday!!!

Todays dives were Columbia and Yucab!

Here is what Cozumel Insider says current weather conditions are:

Weather Underground gave 100% chance of rain today, but of course it doesn't mean it will rain all day. I do have to remind myself of that. Current conditions mostly cloudy, from that site. Cozumel, Mexico Forecast : Weather Underground

I don't like diving in rain for a number of reasons, but it's usually better than not diving.
