Alright, I guess the next step is to talk to the owner one more time before I bring the red flag on his shop. This board was very helpful and I am glad that a community of Scuba Divers like you all were here to answer the questions and concerns that I had. When I am done confronting the owner, i will definitely post it here first.

Thanks again Ramo

Just remember it is usually easier to change dive shops than it is to change the knowledge of an "expert" scuba shop owner. You also need to ask yourself this. If my LDS owner was this misinformed about such a fundamental question concerning tanks what else is he misinformed about.

Mine was wrong about whether my less than 10 year old pony needed a current eddy test. I just asked them to check again as I wasn't doing it, and they cleared up the confusion. Dive shops usually have that done at a fire extinguisher testing facility or similar, and miscommunications happen.

i found more on the shelf life. dont have the reference but here it goes. there is a 24 year life on al tanks. at that point they can still be used but there must be a log entry for each fill. Also tanks that are used in a business that get filled daialy or more need to have a log to track the # of fills. There may be more reauirements to go with that but info is info....

I know you said you don't have the reference, but you must be able to tellus SOMETHING about the source...

I'm sorry but this topic has been beaten to death and I have never seen or heard a word about this 24 year milestone regarding logging of fills. Lacking a reference I can only consider it misinformation.

With no references, I'm afraid you have found nothing. We have more unreferenced rumor than we can stand. Isn't that where this thread started?

you may be right and in light of juagrens post the source he referenced may be where i read it and did not se the 3ht in the reading. sorry

I don't believe it.

One major problem with most of the posts in this thread is a dive shop makes little or no money on selling tanks.

Perhaps, they might make a little more money on hydro's and VIP's.

However the Risk is high on filling tanks, again for little profit.

After 20 years, it makes more sense to replace the tank and valve than to hydro and VIP it.

If you figure out the cost of hydro and VIP against getting a brand new tank and valve, you are better off replacing an old tank.

If your tank fails, you just wasted your money.

Any tank that was made before 1990 should be scrutinized.

I wish all the tanks and valves in the tropics were replaced at least every 10 years.

After 10 years, most of them are trashed and need to be replaced.
