K69,

You do realize your staying right in the city with retail shops all around you? Nothing wrong with that just be aware it will be busy during the day. I like to stay right in town when going solo many options just a few blocks away.

I see last time you stayed at Villablanca. I'll be staying there first part of April how did you like Villablanca? Why the change to Casa Mexicana?

Have a great trip

The proximity to town is actually why we're staying there this time. Our last trip we stayed at Wyndham. I've stayed there three times and it's really nice if you like all inclusive and a long drive. I've also stayed at Fiesta Americana, Casa Del Mar, and Hotel Cozumel. We stayed at Villa Blanca once and would do it again despite the really hard matresses. Just be sure and upgrade to one of their Superior rooms. You won't like the pool at Villa Blanca. The only people that use it seem to be the local little kids. At least that's how it was when we were there. I'm not a big fan of sharing a pee filled pool with a bunch of little todlers. :shocked2:

It seems like every time we go there we keep thinking about trying some place within a short walking distance of the square. Between that and us liking to try new places, Casa Mexicana was the perfect choice.

Who are you diving with?

Mau will usually pick me up in his truck around 8:00 and drive me down to the shop.

That's the answer I just received from Opal at Scuba Mau. They will pick us up each day from out front of the hotel and drive us to the shop.

Is that great service or what? :D

I am at Casa Mexicana right now and it is pretty much as others have said. Nice room, the most comfortable bed I have slept on in Mexico. The pool is definitely nothing more than a kids pool, but the breakfast and proximity to town make up for it. We upgraded to the ocean front room for 10 bucks a night.

K69 thanks for the info on Villablanca.

Last Sept. I spent so much time hanging out at La Palapita (sp) and doing lunches with Suba Mau I thought we would try staying at Villablanca this time. Traveling with 2 other divers that stayed at Hotel Cozumel last year and were looking to try something new this trip. Hope it works out ok we booked 3 standard rooms and depending on the upgrade charge we may go for the bigger room. How are the standard rooms? they haven't been getting the best reviews lately.

With 3 of us a taxi into town is no big deal but will also try some of the local eats, Blue Angel, La Hatch, Ernestos any other suggestions?

I was not impressed with the standard rooms. We upgraded after the first night. It's a WORLD of difference and well worth the difference in price. It's like staying in a totally different hotel.

I like the standard room if I am traveling with another guy.The room is set up old motel style with 2 single beds and night stand between. The shower is a really strange set up.It resembles a roman type bath with a deep step down and nothing to grab on to.
The superior rooms are really much nicer but have a king and futon sofa.OK for a couple but maybe not as good for two guys traveling together.

We all went with the standard because were getting seperate rooms and Orbitz wanted $20 extra per night. From what I've read seems most people pay less then that for the upgrade.

Hopefully the standard will work out just looking for a clean, cold, secure room.

Thanks

I think that you have made the right choice for the reasons mentioned above. I have stayed in both the town rooms and the oceanview rooms(with my nondiving wife) I did not see any difference in the rooms other than the view. It cost me a lot more than $10 to upgrade to an oceanfront room but if you can get this deal go for it and ask for room 501. The Mexicana is my first choice in hotels in Cozumel.

I still say get the superior room. The price difference wasn't much at all as I remember. If it's just two guys, you could trade off nights between the king bed and the futon, and there's even a partial wall separating them.

Blue Angel had really good food when we ate there in 2009. Been meaning to go back for more.

I love Ernesto's Fajitas! I first tried them back in the 90's at their former location near the square. After that, I sampled the fajitas at just about every Kansas City Mexican resaurant, hoping to find something similar, but had no luck. I think their recipe got out on the island though. Now days most fajitas on Cozumel taste suspiciously similar to Ernesto's. :eyebrow:
