So you claim you admitted it was a stupid idea and claim you're going to practice doing it in the same post? Let me save you some time and trouble Don, taking a garbage bag into the water is a major league stupid idea on many levels, let it go. This is almost as classic as your sub surface smb for compensating for poor navigation and buddy skills and the ultra classic thread about your "friend" going OOA and mugging a diver doing deco that everyone immediately realized was you. Let's face facts DD, you really should avoid giving dive advice....EVER, you are clearly grotesquely under qualified. Read, learn, but stop spreading dangerous nonsense.

TrashAir :snicker:

This split thread has gone on and on, when all was needed was one rational post explaining why the idea was bad.

Just to be clear, this thread was not split from the other discussion. It was started by someone out of their own concern for the validity of the idea.

And I think this statement hits the nail on the head regarding why you tend to catch flak. all was needed was one rational post explaining why the idea was bad.

I think the vast majority of experienced divers don't need a rational post to explain why this is a bad idea, it's pretty self evident. I think you're often eager to help other divers which is admirable. The problem is that when someone presents an idea, you don't look past the idea and judge the merits of it before you pass it along. That is where the backlash tends to start.

Is a trash bag better than nothing? Probably.

Might it encourage someone to take the "cheap" way out rather than investing in a SMB? Possibly.

Is it easily inflatable? Not compared to the small neck of a SMB.

Is it durable? Not compared to a SMB.

Is there anything you can do with a trash bag that you can't with an SMB? Not really.

You have at times given some great general advice here, especially on finding travel deals, etc. Not trying to sound rude, but some of your diving advice doesn't always fall into that same category of quality.

In one of your posts on this subject, you mentioned that you had read about this method and although you carry the bag you had never actually tried it yourself. I think you might find responses a lot less painful if you restricted your advice to proven methods rather than "I overheard this and thought it would be a good idea..."

This might be mildly worth something if they made Neon Green or Orange trash bags...

taking a white trash bag is about worthless. at any distance a WHITE trash bag in waves would just look like a "white cap" at distance to anyone searching for you.

You'd be better off holding up one of your split fins....

:rofl3::rofl3::rofl3::rofl3:
split fins..... your gonna die :rofl3::rofl3:

WTH is a sub surface smb...?

I've heard the mugging a diver remark before and figured I knew the origin.
Just to be clear, this thread was not split from the other discussion. It was started by someone out of their own concern for the validity of the idea.
My mistake, got the two confused...

:hmmm:

That was quite the edit.....Too bad it had not been quoted.

WTH is a sub surface smb...?

Your hair brained idea of floating an smb below the surface to get the attention of a DM when you get separated(can you say poor buddy skills?). As for the OOA thread, I'm sure someone here has the link, be VERY careful what you wish for.
