One might argue that if you can't do a meager 8 dives a year at a certain level, who cares what your card says you are qualified to do if your skills are too stale to keep you and your teammates adequately safe underwater.

I will care what it says as even if my team and I feel comfortable with the skills, I cannot do those dives as I will not be able to obtain the trimix fills.

I went cave diving with a guy who had been out of cave diving for years, but who had an old NACD(?) card signed by JJ. He started back in slowly, and did fine. After doing a bunch of C1/C2 level dives he was quickly back to being a better cave diver than me in my newly-minted C2 form. I don't see the value in needing him to drop another $2k to re-take his cave course...

I don't think you'd need to re-take the course to renew the cert if you've let it expire. At least my buddies did only a one-day re-eval before our Cave 2. They'd let the C1 card expire, but they had the required dives, though.

IMO, the whole renewal thing is there more to make you think about how current your skills are - the minimum of 25 dives in 3 years at the cert level is hardly enough to maintain skills unless you do lots of other diving too at the same time.

My Fundies instructor had his T2 cert lapse, and he DID have to do the class over again.

I'm not sure they have to be trimix dives.

Send a PM to Rainer. I think he's intending to count long dives (50-60 at 100') on 32% with Oxygen deco towards his renewal.

You can count whatever dives you feel are appropriate for the level you are recertifying for.
For Tech1:
32% + O2 deco
30/30 with no deco
21/35 or 18/45 with 50% deco

All would be adequate if you feel they are in the spirit of the Tech1 cert.

I <name> warrant that I am an active diver having done at least an average of 8 dives per year (25 over three years) within the curriculum for which I am applying to renew. I remain confident in my skills with diving experience across the range of my diving qualifications.
(from GUE)

Even if you fail to recertify most shops and operators don't care since no other agencies have even entertained the concept of certifications lapsing due to lack of use (except UTD which also has a expectation of recent dives so that your skills have not lasped).

I will sure do :) We are going to be around NYC this New Year but I doubt my wife will let me dive :D But most likely I will be coming to the City sometime in the spring so we can definitely make some dives ! When do charters start operating in NYC ? I would love to check out some wrecks

Apologies for delayed response, Elan, as I've not popped back onto this thread in some time.

There are a few charters that still go out now but most will start again in March/April. Enjoy NYC next week, she's a lively city.

Ouch, that's an expensive renewal. Do you happen to know the reason for the lapse--did he not have the requisite number of qualifying dives within the 3.5 years allowed, or was it just a matter of failing to send in the paperwork?
