darn you all
i'm a puter nerd an you all make me look like. . .
well i learnt a lot from this post
I knew .jpg had a loss, don't know if my camera does raw, i've heard of ifran view.STOP!!!!!!!
i need to get a c card b4 i start trying to get incriminating photos er uh. . nice pics dandy:D

If your original is a jpeg and you open with PS and you do a 'save as' (so the edited version is saved as a seperate file) and close the orginal (with no saving), does that degrade the original file?
Essentially the original file would have been opened & closed in PS unless just opening and viewing a jpeg file degrades it?

Exactly!, when ever I edit ANY file I open and then do a "save as"(different name) first, leaving the original untouched for a backup.:14:

I generally suggest a new diver not carry a camera for 50-100 dives; learn to dive comfortably and safely first. I know that many do, but that's my story and I am sticking to it.

I make 2 copies of each downloaded set, as I mentioned earlier. One folder I name Orginals with the date and save it until I am totally sure. The other I can play with however feels good. :crafty:

Ok, question. If I download from my camera to my hard drive and then copy that original from the hard drve to an external drive to be a back-up copy, would that copy be degraded?

I have now started doing it like above where I download from the camera an original and also download and 'original' copy as a back-up copy.

Yes, every time the file (JPEG) is put somewhere new it compresses! So you can backup from the original media to two locations or edit and save as a TIFF! Or put them on a CD/DVD where they will always be read only! But remember CD/DVD only last up to 10 years! The Archival type last a lot longer!

When your camera saves a picture in TIFF or JPEG it is apply processing to the photo
OMG, my grammar was atrocious last night! :rofl3: In my defense, I wrote that after midnight... :lotsalove:

Marc, moving a TIFF file and I think PSD file will not degrade the quality no matter how many times you move them.

I suppose that would be correct, but the differences could be negligible, wouldn't they?

I guess for highest quality possible, you could download all the pics of the day into a folder on your computer named Originals and the date, then repeat the download to a like named folder on the flash dive.

It did kinda look like a lot of spam mail I get. :eyebrow:

50-100?:11:
Don, I am afraid to buy green bananas:rofl3:
Actually I'm getting a cheap one for freedive/snorkling and am looking into a housing for my lil canon.
I will no doubt be too busy at first, but i have the attention span of a ferret on 2 cups of espresso. So if I have to wait for any reason (i need a new avatar):D

I'm tempted to upgrade from my Canon A540 6mp - love it, never leave the house without it, usually on my belt - to the A580 with 8 mp, but it wouldn't fit the housing. I'm sure they plan it that way :eyebrow: and I paid more for the housing that the camera. Careful about getting locked into an old camera by a housing purchase; often better to get a new camerea with new warranty at the time you get the housing.

I won't carry my Sea Life as a land camera. Too expensive to replace. If I dropped my A540 on the sidewalk and broke it, I could replace it on ebay for less than $100.

:hmmm: I don't like to see :newbie:s with cameras, but enough said.
