be prepared for a lot of rubbing. Better to use a polishing wheel if you have one small enough to get down to the glass. Maybe a dremel tool?
You have to be carefull with that stuff and power tools because it will remove glass. Too much and too uneven and you'll screw up the optics...but even with a machine it's fairly slow going so its not so scary. Not much fear I reckon doing it by hand.

Also, my other tip is WATER IS YOUR FRIEND. Don't let your paste get too dry while you're polishing! Keep a mister handy

I learned about this stuff a few years ago, when driving a brand new audi that I had just bought, I stopped to fish a piece of pine straw out from under the wiper blade on a rainy day. The auto wiper triggered a wipe while my had was there & I couldn't get out of the way fast enough...knocked the blade off the arm, and the arm put a nice scratch in the windshield...right in my field of view too! I ordered some and did a DIY repair that turned out pretty good!

Got the Cerium Oxide today. It’s in powder form. As you said I did a lot of brushing with wet toothbrush to remove the stubborn etched surface.

To show that stubborn white residue is not due to foggy camera lens, nor my cataract, I just brush the right side of the mask lens so you can compare it with the left side of the lens, as shown, below.

Here are the close-up views of before and after of the nose bridge and the right side of the lens:

Once I finish brushing the whole lens, I’ll post the finished product here. Stay tuned!

Halfway there. Still have some residue on the edges (places harder to reach).

How much did you spend on products Dan? Good masks like my all time favourite, Holls M 1 are not too expensive, I just bought a 'knockoff ' of the M1 as a spare mask and was surprised how good it is. I did enjoy reading about the different products used in in this topic though. Please tell us you purchased a new mask and what you bought. 🤿

I’m interested if magic eraser would accomplish the same task. It’s something that a lot of us probably already have easy access to, and also a mild abrasive

YEAH TWELVE DOLLARS!

But one would first have to ask how the mask got to such a disgusting place in the first place

Spot on.
Prevention is better than cure. PERIOD.
I clean my mask with vinegar after every diving trip. Never ever has any issue whatsoever. Both lens are nearly as good as new, not counting the slight scratch on the outside.
