I forgot to hit on lying.. sorry.

I was just stating it occurs on both sides.

None of us were involved in the treaty making process; otherwise it probably would've been more cut-and-dry. Either "whaling is allowed" or "no whaling whatsoever"

I've always kind of felt "international treaties" were kind of humorous. Many Japanese for years depended on whaling as their only livelihood. Who are we to tell a sovereign nation what they can and can't do? Iran, North Korea, Pakistan and the old Soviet Union can't have Nukes but our friends can... Ehh, some day we'll get it together or blow each other up.

The BOTTOM line is that the rest of the planet is going to suffer if we keep doing what we[humans] are doing! Right? Can we agree on that? We will try beat them all.

I beg to differ. Life on this planet will go on with or without us. Another catchphrase I hear all the time is that we have to save the planet. Even if we ever get around to nuking ourselves into oblivion, the main thing we will accomplish is bringing about our own extinction. Cockaroaches will survive and evolve, and biodiversity will find its way back into the fold, probably with some kind of creature that thrives on the radioactive waste, at least until that is gone....

Do I think we should lessen our impact on the creatures we share the planet with? Abosfriggin'lutely! But it is more for our sake than it is for anything else. The way I see it now, by the end of the next century, it is likely we will be in another ice age. With how cushy we all have gotten used to having our living arrangements, I figure that will be the beginning of the end. Then Mr. Darwin can get back to doing what he does best, and this planet will recreate itself in our absense or greatly diminished presence.

So yes, as a race, we better get off our asses and do something.

Did I not say outright that it was spun from the other side? The reported income numbers do not lie. I went to the NRA becouse I knew I could find numbers there. The point being again, most of these fuzzy feel good groups have hidden adgendas and are using your money for things you will have no Idea about unless you look deeper.
H2Andy:
that article is so biased it's not funny.. first of all, it's called "Who's Bankrolling the Enemy"

hardly a non-partisan approach, wouldn't you agree? so, ok... now we know whose perspective we are getting. that's ok, so long as they can provide good facts to back up their arguments.

unfortantely, they can't.

the article goes on to make various factual mistatements. these are the two i liked the best:

1. HSUS is againts owning pets: FALSE.

from the article:

"Today, of course, HSUS is anti-hunting, anti-meat eating and is even against owning pets."

the last statement is just a lie:

check out the HSUS site on pets ("Pets for life") for such topics as renting for pet owners and evaluating pet stores:

http://www.hsus.org/pets/

2. HSUS is not involved in local shelters: FALSE

from the article:

"But though HSUS raises enough money to finance animal shelters in every state, it does not own or run a single one. HSUS feeds off this confusion."

first off, HSUS never claims to run shelters. it does, however, have a section about shelters and HSUS's Animal Shelter Consultation Program:

"The HSUS Animal Services Consultation (ASC) Program is answering these calls. At a shelter's request, we assemble an expert team to provide a customized, comprehensive evaluation, including everything from animal handling to client service. We review extensive background documentation from the agency, seek comments from the community about it, visit the site to see it first-hand, and then develop short- and long-term recommendations for improving the agency's operations and animal care."

http://www.hsus.org/pets/animal_shelters/the_hsus_asc_program_helping_shelters_help_communities.html

anyway... such distortions of the truth in order to make a point are just bad

that article is worthless

yes, actually, you did

It's almost impossable to find a "pure" source. Thats why I look at everything I can find weather I agree on the surface or not. Then and only then do I form an opinion.

I had a closer read. It's interesting...but I wonder what your point here is in relation to the original post about the Yangtze dolphin? Is there something outrageously uncommon?

Additionally, what do you think an animal advocate organization would endorse? You know it's not hunting! What's interesting though is the amount of capital the Humane and ASPCA have. I just hope the CEO's etc. are not making seven figures. That would chaps my pants. More digging needed, but I can surmise that under the covers of any large organization that you'll never find totally clean sheets.

Fill in the blank Unlimited are all animal orgiznations that procure land and promote conservation and part of conservation is hunting to keep numbers at ideal levels.
Besides there obvious adgenda, I was pointing out the money they spend on anti gun causes. Save the whale is fine but I don't want my money being covertly spent on things Im aganst, which is again my point. Look and see what they support besides what they sell.
Id be suprised if they only make six figures BTW.

You are advocating your own agenda. Please stay on topic. Opposing anti-gun organizations is a completely divergent topic and unrelated to diving, or the marine environment.

As is touting a letter to GWB about Darfur under a anti whaling adgenda.

that is actually really really sad. that is the only way I can describe how I feel about it. How many other species of fish, insects, plants.. animals... have gone extinct in the last decade that we will know even know existed?

I do actually remember seeing a doco on those very dolphins a number of years ago. Terrible, I hope that they do still exist somewhere, hidden from us...
