That's also another problem too....when the politicians get involved, or the extremetist enviromental groups. They are interested more in building a "powerbase" than to really help in a cause. Also you notice when the animal looks "sexy" on camera...it gets more attention as opposed to when the animal is just "ordinary" on camera.

That might very well be the case with some organizations. However, it really comes down to making the best choices about organizations which put their money where their mouth is + take direct action. Given that, what have you done lately to help these critters?

Never seen a non-fresh water river? There is one about 2 miles from me right now

Yep...and the Yangtze ain't one of 'em...

Wiki is a wonderful thing...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yangtze_River

Salt water rivers are generally tidal rivers near the coast line. This one just about cuts China in half, east to west.

Umm....

The Japanese pirate whaling fleet has departed from Japan on a mission to defy international law and international public opinion and slaughter over 1,000 whales in the Southern Ocean in December of 2006 and January of 2007.

Umm.....pirate whaling fleet? Defy international law?

So what you are saying is that the organization you have chosen to back couldn't even make it one paragraph into their web site without twisting and warping the facts to tug at some heartstrings? I would ask them what else they are lying to you about.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/4417462.stm

Like it or not, the very countries who have enacted and enforced the ban on whaling have granted permission to the Japanese to conduct this whaling operation. That, by definition, would neither make it a "pirate" operation that is "defying international law." This is exactly what is wrong with all of these whacko environmentalist organizations. They can't get by with merely telling the truth. They have to fabricate the details that are going to suck in all the stupid masses that don't bother to research the facts.

you don't have anything better to do today than to call me stupid?
You are entitled your opinion, but you don't have to be a jerk about it.:mooner:

Gangrel,
Being that I'm so stupid, which countries that have banned whaling are letting the
Japanese kill whales in their waters? Should we expect to see the Japanese in Hawaii
soon harpooning humpbacks on our next dive trips? You call them liars, what exactly have they lied about? Have you ever actually seen a whale? Would you like your grandchildren to? Today it is the River dolphin, what
tomorrow? What do you suggest people do? Nothing? Is that what smart people do?

Did you even bother to read the link? Let's see....International Whaling Commission, whether you like it or not, grants Japan permits each year to harvest a set number of Minke whales for "scientific research." Whether this actually is scientific research or not, to call this fleet a "pirate fleet" or say that they are "illegally" hunting whales is an outright lie. Sorry if that is a bitter pill to swallow, but I am only stating the facts.

I want to make as much of a difference as I can, but we get nowhere by starting out with a lie. If the website had started off with a statement that legal or not, the harvesting of whales is wrong, I would have no argument. If they stated that whaling is not sustainable, I would generally agree (though this is quite debatable in the case of Minkes).

cdreamer:
Should we expect to see the Japanese in Hawaii soon harpooning humpbacks on our next dive trips? ?

No, but irrelevant to the argument. This isn't about what I or anyone else wants to see. This is about a statement on this being illegal and a pirate fleet. Try to stay on topic. Your emotions are getting the best of you.

cdreamer:
You call them liars, what exactly have they lied about??

See above.

cdreamer:
Have you ever actually seen a whale? Would you like your grandchildren to?

Again, a good emotional point, but irrelevant to the argument.

cdreamer:
Today it is the River dolphin, what tomorrow?

Ahh, and now we get to the crux of why we are even having this argument in the first place...because you somehow know that the Japanese whaling fleet has been sailing up the Yangtze and harvesting white river dolphin to their heart's content, and that is why they are ext.....no wait....that's not right....umm, err....

What exactly are you saying? That the river dolphins from the Yangtze like to party on weekends by putting on Minke whale costumes and swim out of the fresh water river into the vast salt water ocean, then get caught by the Japanese whaling fleet in the antarctic, and that is why the river dolphin is extinct?

You are cutting up bits and pieces of different stories, throwing them into a hat, tossing the contents of the hat like a fresh spring salad, then pulling those pieces out and putting them together into your own story. Sorry, bud...the truth don't exactly work like that.

If you want to make a difference, you may want to start by telling only the truth, so everything you say doesn't get discredited the first time you are caught lying. That is one of the major shortcomings of Greenpeace, Sierra Club, HSUS, PETA, and just about every other whacko environmental activist organization on the planet. They embelish to make their case stronger and gather more support, which works great until they get caught in a lie. After that, they do more harm than good, not only because no one listens to them anymore, but because no one listens to conservationists trying to state a reasonable case, either. We all get lumped into one gigantic sealed toxic sludge barrel and dumped into the bottom of the very same ocean we are trying to protect.

dive_lover88:
Isnt it the case that when conservationists state their cases, they get tossed to the side. Then when it really happens, the blame game starts and guess who get blamed...the conservationists. Someone tell me if i'm wrong on this. This is too much

Conservationist cases get tossed to the side largely because people are sick of hearing the diatribes from the environmentalist activists, and most people don't understand the difference. The activists scream about everything, with or without merit, until no one wants to listen to either them or anyone who sounds even remotely like them.

This is exactly the hysterical uninformed type of person that allows a bunch of eco wackos to avoid work and spend there days gainful unemployed doing no good to anyone or anything crusing around on there tax exempt ships. They play on uninformed emotions of people that do not want to hear the truth or the real facts. When pointed out to them, they react just like this person.
Just for yor edification, the US has limited whaling as does Canada, russia, greenland and most every country attached to the Artic ocean.

Again to my point, if you want a cause, look into it first, most are not what they seem on the surface.
