you can answer that question simply. you say with all the "fresh" seafood. here is one example and you judge what fresh is .i have worked on scallop dragging boats. some of which retain their scallops onboard on ice for up to three days .once unloaded they are transported less than a mile to a fish plant where they are held for an additional 2 or 3 days. they are then sold to the super market or fish markets and displayed for up to 4 more days . they have been handled for over a week by god knows how many people. now i go scallop diving for 3 hpurs, shuck them myself and bag them off in salt water and freeze them. these even months later taste far better than anything fresh from the fish market. call me spoiled but i buy all my fish here where i live and it is never more than 6 hours out of the water when i freeze it or eat it . i have had people tell me there is something wrong with my scallops cause they dont stink like fish..now thats my kind of "fresh"....

I like these photos. this kid will have some great memories with his dad "at work".

The kids of the mahi and the ono sure won't have any great memories of their dads being harpooned.

Last year there was some controversy about whether or not fish felt pain. Some scientists said their brains are not capable of it, while others thought otherwise.

Now who thinks a fish might have a memory capable of remembering parents... let alone how they might have expired?

I eat fish fresh or I give it away for others to do the same.

I got another reminder recently at a "reported to be great", on the water seafood restaurant, that most have fish that is rarely even of fair quality. My grouper sandwich smelled bad!

I guess I should have ordered a cheeseburger.

Great pics Catherine!

All our friends consider my wife and I as "fish snobs" as the only fish we eat out is sushi.Having fresh fish is a major reason she encourages me to go spearfishing even when she's taking pix.Last time I watched Discovery I noticed some fish cannibalize their young if food is scarce. So much for familial relationships.:shakehead

I shot a 4 lb nassau grouper a couple weeks ago and when I brought it to the boat my sweetheart looked at me with a touch of disgust and said, "that fish is rank". I said, "what? this is a grouper". She just looked away and said, "you eat it then". So I cleaned it and took it home. That night we fried it up with a nice hogfish in the next pan. And sure as the sunrise, she was right. It smelled bad. Maybe that was the fish you got Chad. ? Do they smell bad up there too? I won't shoot anymore of them. And we did eat the fish. It was kind of like some cheeses. Once you get past the first bite it tastes good.

The kids of the mahi and ono were stoked to see Dad leave home.....before he ate them.

Hank,

I'll bet the grouper I was served came from some longliner, was probably 3 weeks old before being frozen by a wholesaler. Who knows how long after that before it got sold to the restaurant, then finally thawed out and put on a bun? My mistake!

They took Nassau's off the list in Florida a long time ago.

They are worse than a red grouper about scavenging, so often they have worms. Usually it's just the guts that can stink so bad, but I'm sure it varies depending on what they eat.

I shot a big rock hind in the Bahamas once that made everybody throw up when I gutted it. We washed the whole thing off the back of the boat.

I stick mostly to gag & black, because of the challenge and the quality of the fish.

Just to set the record straight,
I am not a "hunter-hater", I just don't approve of spearing on scuba. It's great that moderators make sure no one strays from the guidelines and I guess I got carried away. So now you all can delete this post and go back to playing nicely. As long as you don't see any posts that contradict your beliefs, that means everyone agrees with you, right?
Have a nice day.

Just look at my avatar LOLOL

I've been spearfishing for 27 yrs, since I was kid, the last 11 with SCUBA mostly.
Thou I do some freediving from time to time, my lungs and physical condition isn't the one of a 15yr old anymore so without SCUBA, I can't reach 60fsw as I used to do long time ago.
I don't shoot what I won't eat, and if not a reasonable size, I would let it go, same my buddy.

I go out to have a good time and don't expect to cover the price of the trip with enough fish, some times I had a bad day and came home empty handed, but the trip was worth every penny sunk into it, as Waywardson said, the catch is a bonus in my opinion, the main purpose is dive to relax and get away from the work routine and problems.

We also troll in the SI and release the fish that we don't want to eat such as cudas and small fish.
