My wife and I will be St. Croix in a few weeks (January 18 -31), celebrating our anniversary and doing some recon on the island as a potential place to live once we are empty nesters.
In the past, at other destinations, I’ve watched other divers hunt, lionfish. However, I have never hunted myself. I understand the negative impact the invasive species has on the ecology of the reefs and how their neurotoxin functions. Hunting lionfish looks fun and I have been told that lionfish are good to eat. I’ve preemptively watched videos on how to despine these fish and how to prepare them for a meal in anticipation of hunting them myself.
Skimming through these forums, I’ve picked up some intel about the reef sharks around St. Croix shadowing lionfish hunters, as well as reports that the lionfish are scarce. However, many of the post I read are a few years old, so I’m not sure what the current atmosphere is.
In any case, I am optimistically hoping to do some lion fish hunting (and eating) in St. Croix as well as some shore dives and was wondering if any locals would like to buddy up?
Any advice, recommendations, or warnings would be welcomed and appreciated.
