I agree With Scubapro being highest performance but: the last 2 Mk20s I had could not get rid of IP creep 5-7 PSI new pistons new seats, different shops everything Gave up.

After my last 2 Mk20s with the composite piston could not hold intermediate pressure even with new Pistons new Seats and 1 hr of cycling I along with the techs at three other shops have decided scuba Pro has Over-engineered the MK 20-25 series. It now has more parts than a Diaphram reg. Get an Apeks or Zeagle and things stay rock-steady and are easy to maintain.

BTW my Mk-20s went to 3 different shops and I even watched them rebuild them.

I work at an LDS, so I have gotten to try almost all the regs out there, IMO, the Aqualung Legend is tough to beat.

Having said that, the National Science Foundation uses only Scubapro in Antarctica, so that should tell you something. In my tests, I would have put them second only to the Legend.

They are both outstanding!

For what it's worth.

I agree the Mk 20/25 is over engineered. Scubapro peaked with the Mk10 first stage and while the MK15, MK20/25 have offerred theoretically better flow numbers, that improvement (that no body actually needed or used anyway) has come at the cost of increased maintainance and decreased reliability. The only real advantage of the later first stages has been DIN compatibility and higher service pressures. I would have preferred to see an updated MK 10 design fully incorporating these changes.

The thermal insulating system on the MK20 and 25 is, despite what Scubapro claims, inadequate in very cold water and is less effective than the silicone based SPEC kits on the Mk 10. They requires a little more maintenance to keep the silicone topped off, but they never froze up.

In terms of new regulators, the only thing better than a MK20 or Mk25 at present in my opinion is one of the many copies of the Mk 10 sold by other companies. Isn't that ironic?

Has anybody gone deep with both the MK25/16 and the aqualung legend? I haven't done any deep diving yet, but i hope to grow into it over the next several years and I'd like to be able to keep the same reg. What are your opinions?

get-wrecked,
If I had not just bought an Aqualung Legend LX, I would next opt for the Sherwood Maximus or Oasis. My first reg was an Oasis, 1990 vintage and it was great.

Aqualung and Sherwood are my tops.

Hi

i like apeks because it is worry free..
a "friend" of my, in our school, dives 4 years a DS4 with no service... breathes excellent. You have to see this guy throwing his Apeks into his box while he stands 6 feet away from it.
the lucky bastard :D
