what does "best" mean i wonder. it probably means different things to different people because they weigh attributes differently (e.g. ease of breathing vs bubble interference vs reliability vs cold water capability vs ease of servicing...). therefore, it would be helpful to know why you think a given reg is best.

I don't know anybody who has an apeks reg -- why do you like them the most?

In reference to "what does 'best' mean" -- I consider breathability and reliability to both be extremely important. But I understand what you mean -- I don't dive in extremely cold water and, therefore, I don't consider that a very important feature for me.

Apeks is tops in my books for breathability and reliability, two of the most important things to you. It is possible that their aren't any distributors in your area, as they are manufactured in the UK.

Check out their website at www.apeks.co.uk. You will see information on how Apeks regs were used in the current open ocean record dive to 308 meters!

guys, there is no way to say one reg is the "best" because there will never be any consensus as to what reg qualities are most important in determining what's best.
I think the best reg out there is one that is easily user adjustable and serviceable and one that the manufacturer makes parts and service training readily and economically available for the regs Owner. There is no "best" reg... Scubapro and Apeks comes fairly close because they both are really good regs and parts and service info, while not supported by the manufacturer, aren't that difficult to acquire. For me and what I use it for, I'll use my Scubapro Mk20/S600 as long as its still functional. I'm completely satisfied with it and have no reason to ever change or upgrade even if something thats supposedly better comes along.

If you want to know what reg is the best, go try them all and decide for yourself... thats whats important.

I know LDS let you try BC's before buying them . . . does the same apply for Regs?

Depends on the shop. Some will, some won't. Check with your LDS about their policy on this. Just a bit of advice, but I would recommend that if you do try out a reg at a LDS, and decide to buy that particular reg, don't buy it online. That is a major slap in the face to the LDS, in my opinion. By letting you try out a reg, they are trying to nurture a relationship with you.

I'm looking at buying a reg soon. I have it narrowed down to three. The Scubapro Mk25 G250, the Apeks Atx50, and the Sherwood Maximus. But I've noticed not many people seem to mention Sherwood in these polls, any reason for this? Most of the people in my area rave about them. The water temp here in Lake Champlain Never gets much above 50 Degree's F at depth, so cold water performance is a must. Plus I will be doing a fair amount of tec diving with it, wrecks mostly. Any comments?
