I think you forgot a some of the others that make excellent regs.
There are a few other polls that have been posted that have a more complete listing, you may want to check those out.
I'd recommend Abysmal's regs, their 2nd stage is a Kirby Morgan/DSI and the 1st is a Poseidon.

I think ScubaPro's MK-II is one of the best regulators ever produced. It has proved itself as a cheap, simple and reliable regulator, a true "work horse" that will never fail you down. And it is proven for many many many years, more than most other reg manufacturers have been existing..

BTW, I use most of the time a MK20/S600 but I still think my very old MKII is the (undoubtable) king of regs.

Other than piston/diaphram design, what's the difference between the Scubapro MK16 and the MK25. Is the MK25 worth the extra money?

I agree with the post that says try them and see. I know that LDS will let you try one out if you were interested. I would imagine that most dive shops that want business would do the same.

Personally, I bought an Atomic Z1 and swore that I would never buy another reg. (I can't afford an M1, sorry!) Then, I tried a Legend LX in the pool and bought one the next day. It became my primary reg. As I dive doubles some of the time, that set-up works well for me. I have heard from people that don't like the Legend for whatever reasons, and I am cool about that as well. I all depends on what you are comfortable with. There is no best regulator for everybody's situation or preferences. We are all a little different.

I have used a number or regulators, but my favorite for the past 3 years is my Scubapro MK20 UL/S600 The first stage is amazingly light (balanced, aluminum alloy, carbon fiber) and the S600 second stage regulator is very compact and has a very comfortable mouthpiece. I guess it comes down to what you trust and makes you feel good. And as for Mares, I have only good things to say about the MR 12 / Nikos, Which I used since 1994 until I upgraded to the Scubapro in 2000.

I would say ScubaPro. They breath extremely well, are reliable and easy to service. I've dove every reg they make and they all breath fine. My favorites are the Mk25, Mk16, R380 and S600. I have 2 G250s that I like a lot as well.

I think that Apex and Atomic are probably competing for the #2 position. Both seemed to breath nicely but, my ScubaPros breathed a bit better.

I prefer my Apeks ATX-200 and Atomic T1x. I also like the Apeks TX-50.

I have dived at 100+ with both Apeks with very easy breathing.

I haven't found any reason to try any other ones. I guess I was lucky that my first reg was the TX-40 in training and my first purchase was the Tx-50.

The port placements are different and MK25 swivels and MK16 does not. See link for other differences. Also the new MK25 is not pictured on the website. Just a matter of preference and how much you can spend. MK16 is cheaper. Both are great regs.

The "best" regulator is the one you chose to buy that suits your needs and breaths the way you want it to. Regular service and knowing when it gets a tad off and needing service makes it the best regulator.

tony

ps. I have three of the brands listed......they're all the "best". ;)

I use a posidon odin and jetstream but I am waiting on my new abysmal set up to come it. All the reviews say it is the best and at a great price, I am looking forward to trying it. I bought the odin/jetstream combo because at the time I judged it the best for my uses, it is a little finicky but still great for me. Just wanting to try something new with the Abysmal but I am not retiring my jetstream/odin.
