Go for the Zeagle Flatheads, very well designed and tough as nails, plus less expencive than some of your other choices.

Especially when you look at zeagleexpress.com with the Flathead XP for $350, and the Flathead VI for $360.

I'm in the same boat as the original poster, except I was considering a posiden regulator or possible an OMS. Any opinions on these brands?

I heard they are alright except for parts and service availability.

BTW, thank you for all the responses guys. Keep posting if anyone else has an opinion.

I'm partial to my Zeagle Envoy deluxe regulators. I've tried the Apex regs you listed and they were quite nice, but my dive shop doesn't sell them. I've had Sherwood, but not the new one.

One other thing... keep in mind that if you are diving deep with doubles (tech) you are more likely to be adding helium to the mix. Once you do this even the crappiest regs will breathe great.

Look at the Apex Tek 3. Nice regs, built off the DS/4 but designed for better hose routing.

My experience with Poseiden is dated, but 20 years ago they were very expensive, complex and difficult to service. I have heard that that is still the case to some extent... but good regs.

Regarding OMS, I know nothing of their regs, but my experience with their tanks left me promising to never buy anything from them again. I had some of those tanks that completely rusted out externally after 4 or 5 dives in fresh water. The only response I got was that I should have removed the boots and bands after each dive, and dried the tank! Apparently that was a warranty condition. They refused to answer any other emails from me. The tanks got drilled and recycled. They were one year old with virtually no use.. :shakehead: I still have a 46 I use for an O2 bottle... I sand it and repaint it every year to keep it passing a visual!

Sorry for the hijack... sensitive issue with me~

I will be buying doubles relatively soon for 200' plus dives on air and trimix. ... I want great breathers at any depth, but most important rock solid reliability due to simple design. ... Here are the options I have looked at:
Mares Abyss MR22 or MR42
Apeks XTX 200
Aqualung Legend ACD LX
Scubapro MK17/S600
Sherwood SR1
Zeagle Flatheads
I dive ATX200s, and love them at depth, air or trimix. No problems over 3 years, down to 200'+. I also use Zeagle ZX50Ds under the same conditions. Good regs, although the 50D (with turret) is not a common tec reg, and I have had a turret O-ring blow once (on land, right after pressurizing). My buddy dives the SP Mk17 and Mk25, and praises them as well. My only concern with Mares would be availability of parts, not performance. In our shop experience, it is hard to find a time that Mares has actually shipped a complete order for whatever we were getting, and parts seem to be unreliably available.

I have Mares service shops everywhere around here. I can also get two Abyss MR22's for less than $600 brand new for both of them and from what everyone tells me, they are rock solid as well. I heard about intermediate pressure problems with Apeks. Is that with all their regs??? I wanted to use the SR1's, but apparently they have problems. Does anyone know exactly the problem with those regs??
