If you dive to conditions, foresee issues and adjust mask or tighten strap to suit. The one time
in a thousand dives where strap under hood may be of some benefit is a hindrance for the other
nine hundred and ninety nine.

Perhaps a more prudent consideration would be hose routing.
As John Ormsby is no longer able to mismanage his BOUYANCY
and therefore become a DIRT DART and become entangled.

I don't think it's a big deal whether a diver chooses to wear the mask strap over or under the hood...so long as he/she can: (1) clear it in the event it gets fogged up or flooded and (2) replace with a backup mask in the event the original mask breaks.

For the most part, the people I've encountered who wear their mask under the hood are deathly afraid of taking off their mask underwater. I don't see that as a "healthy" reason. Practice mask remove/replace and mask clearing skills regardless of how you choose to wear your mask.

Bingo IMHO. If you can't do a recreational dive with a mask off and be perfectly comfy doing it then you just increased your chances of dying significantly unfortunately. I think it is wise to get to the point where having your mask off is even a little fun (perceived fun anyway).

In 38 degree water those regular "flushings" around the temples get old really quick!

I've had multiple masks catastrophically fail (i.e. break) during dives. I dive with a backup mask. Removing the broken mask to replace it with the backup would necessitate removing or at least pulling back my hood. I don't want to do that in water cold enough that I wore a hood in the first place.

I generally wear my mask outside my hood, but I tuck the skirt of the mask in under the hood, to aid in keeping it in place and prevent water from seeping in. Just a matter of habit, I suppose.

With long hair, it is just not possible to don a hood by pulling it up from the back. You'd spend half the day trying to get it all tucked in. It's just not possible for me.

Mask inside hood is a lot colder for me as the clips hold a nice gap for water to enter. It also squeezes them slightly so its less comfortable.
Also if i do need to take my mask off underwater i dont want that massive cold water shock on my head having to first remove a hood to do so.

Thats one hell of an impressive entanglement hazard with the octo and the main reg hoses sticking out so far too!

Wearing my mask under my hood is extremely uncomfortable. I've also found my mask leaks more that way, although that is a minor issue.

That said, if there were a reason I thought I would want to remove a hood mid-dive, I might come up with another solution for the hair.

This past summer, there was a thermocline at 85 ft. On my ascent, as I passed the thermocline it became too hot to wear the hood. It was simple enough to remove my mask, pull back the hood and replace the mask. Two or three seconds tops. It's a non-issue.
