Am doing recreational limits, fresh water springs. Need something inexpensive, but decent. Don't care if breathing is not light as a feather, but must be dependable.

Oceanic CDX5/Alpha 8 from Scubatoys. $144, breathes very nice with a balanced and sealed diaphragm first stage, it'll handle the cold very well and is dependable.

I ended up with the XS Scuba AirWave RG320. It breathes well, but it's also one of the few that has a left-handed hose configuration for those of us who like the pony reg hose routed under the left arm.

It's also a flat, horizontal unit, so it lays flat on my chest from my necklace.

Find a "bottom of the line" reg from a well-known company, preferably used on sale.

What you WANT is "cheap" reg, without much in the way of features. You see, all those features will lower its reliability and increase the probability of freeflows. You want something that will work. Period.

I use the bottom of the line ScubaPro, but only because I won it in a LDS promotional raffle. I refused to upgrade it to models with more features.

Thanks to all.
I used to have a Brut but it got stolen. Paid about $175 for it new back about 5 years ago. the prices now seem very high for the Brut.

Oceanic CDX5/Alpha 8 looks good. Do you think it is as reliable as the Brut?

The CDX5/Alpha 8 is a very reliable reg. The first stage has been in use by Oceanic for quite a while now and is a proven reliable reg. The Alpha series from Oceanic are very simple classic downstream second stages, no adjustment, no balancing, just simple and reliable.

I have 4 CDX5 first stages and 2 of the Alpha 8's, and I am quite happy with them.

Sherwood Brut, Scubapro Mk2/R190 (or R380), Aeris A1, all are bottom-of-the-line unbalanced piston first stages and unbalanced second stages and I would think all are utterly reliable and would work well as a pony bottle reg. Zeagle makes an unbalanced piston reg too, and I'm sure it's as good as the others. Same with Oceanic and AquaLung.

Remember the KISS principle; the simpler, the better.

MK2/R190 on ebay for under $100. It's a great pony reg. It will last forever and servicing is a breeze. The "kit" is two o-rings and a very simple seat.

I have a sherwood brut that I originally bought for a pony reg. It's like breathing through a straw.
Even turned up it will hiss and when you inhale and fully crack the second open it still breaths like a straw.
I also have a Scubapro MK2 that I bought to use as a deco bottle reg, and I swear it breaths as good as my MK20. I can't tell the difference.

One thing: With the Brut you can't pressurize it then shut it down underwater because it will suck water backwards into the burp hole, but if you 're turning the valve on and leaving it on it's fine. With the SP MK2 you can pressurize and shut down no problem.
