What kind of computer?

As a new diver (9 times down) I'm going to stay with SPG/Depth Gage and the tables. For one thing it makes me plan a dive and keeps me sharp, gives me a better understanding of the process.
Also I can set my Timex Expedition watch alarm ($25) for whatever bottom time I plan and it will give me enough notice.
And of course since ALL my dive buddies use a computer - what the hell! I can outlast them on air and just follow them around and come up when they do, then make my log entry same as thiers.

oh, the dive computer manufactures don't like you doing that now pops... no sharing of dive computers... they don't make as much money that way. I think most say that no matter if you're holding hands with your buddy, you both "need" a computer because one may be a few inches deeper or shallower and that makes so much difference you know...

I use the Aldadin Air Z o2 complete for my computer and a suunto
viper in gauge mode. I like them all.Wrist mound is the way to go.

I also use a react mounted on a tethered console. I like the graphic display, like a 'fuel' gauge. Most consoles are too big. To get a console I scour EBAY to buy old USD twin gauge. A disc must cut from the back for the React to fit. (The Resource air 'puter is an exact fit). The result, complete with ultra compact old style USD gauge, is light as a feather. I don't like things strapped to my wrist and I only look at the 'puter occasionally. I can estimate my ascent time. I must, however, strap a compass to the left, but the right carries a gun. Incidently, although the React planner is programmed for FO of 1.6, the gauge starts flashing if you go beyond FO 1.4. FO 1.6 is fine with me. For some reason, the Resource allows 20 min @ 100 ft but the React only allows 19 min (air).

Don't worry about 'brain rot'. Reading the 72 page manual will keep you tuned up.

Just want to clear up something about my dive computer use. The computer I use has a dive plan mode (lets you view the no-decompression limits for the depth related to time thing - uses some 'modified ? algorithm') so you can see your maximum bottom time.

Despite this feature, I still use my tables to plan my dives . The computer is just a nice feature.

I know this may seem goofy, but I believe that any computer is no excuse for not planning a dive. I don't have too much diving experience, but that's just what I was taught.

Planning is half the fun. Planning your dive is part of diving and you should do it with or without a dive computer.

Well, there's also the little known fact that I downloaded the Suunto Vyper manual from their site - and can't understand it. I think the Fins should send a couple translators to Japan to learn how to make manuals understandable to Americans - or maybe I'm just dumb.

In no particular order.

Have a Stinger with about 50 dives. Just bought a Cobra (with the compass & disconnect) for the AI. Only one Rescue training dive on it so far. Will probably keep wearing the stinger.

Oh, and I still use the old hard plastic card with tables. It has an absolute lifetime guarantee on the battery! So it never fails!

Depending on what kind of diving I'm doing the tables may be for planning or checking the profile afterward. Most of my idving to date has been strictly recreational with my family, so just staying inside the NDL is first priority, and air consumption has tended to be the limiting factor more than NDL.

Saw some posts regarding the validity of the Suunto RGBM. Not (as yet) an issue for me. I never push the limits, and try to dive that recommended deep first and continually shallower profile.

I anticipate, though, the day will come when I have to rethink that. Just getting up to speed after a vvveeerryyy long hiatus from active diving, and am finding this DIR & Tech stuff very intriguing
