I hope someone can answer this question. I am under the present assumption that the terminology "DIR" may simply be substituted for "technical" as in DIR diving.

I am sure my assumption is incorrect...

What exactly is DIR?

DIR simply stands for Doing It Right. It was first coined by George Irvine of the WKPP about 1995. It's basically a common sense holistic approach to diving (virtually all diving, not just tech) that encompasses gear, mentality, and physical fitness.

Here's some links:

DIR has a dark side unfortunately:

Because of the rigidness of the approach necessary @ WKPP...
Because of the public abuse heaped upon *strokes* by George...
Because of the flawed emulation of George's attitude by internet DIR groupies who themselves have no real skill...
Because of the elitist attitude of many DIR devotees...
Because of the almost religious fervor of the devotees...

As far as PR goes DIR has become its own worse enemy. The system is wonderful but the persona of so many of its proponents is atrocious.

If you can get past the invective then you will be blessed.

at it's finest. Put THIS man in charge of the "truth in advertising" please. BTW, the pugster can get away with it, since he is a DIR devotee as well. :tease:

I got to show Hal Watts ("Mr Scuba") my new FredT backplate this past Satuday... he was impressed to say the least. Then I asked him about DIR... he smiled and asked, "Are you one?" When I indicated I was not, he said "We dive "DOW"... Do it your Own Way!" When I pressed him for an oinion of how he felt about them, he would not really give me one. "They dive the way they want to, and that's OK by me. I dive the way I want to, and that's OK by me too." For such an accomplished diver, he sure open to the ideas of others.

BTW, I was at my LDS yesterday talking to my old OW instructors and they mentioned that Irvine was going to be up this way for a lecture or something next weekend (Northern Virginia).

Maybe I will try to sit in and get assimilated......

Any evidence anywhere of GI being a borg?

That would be cool! You're liable to learn more relevant and interesting info in an hour of listening to him than you have in most of your diving classes combined  :D. I hear he's not nearly as bad in public as he is on the net. He won't tell ya to do anything crazy or stupid like either some "leaders" in the game would.

:)

Mike

Thanks for the input all!

1. I am interested as to what the employees (instructors/managers/owners) at the local dive shops I am researching and priceing my equipment will say when I ask them about DIR and Halcyon BP/Wings. What do you think?

:argue:

2. And what is the negative image the DIR community and it's proponents are painted with. More importantly WHY the negative image?
