What is a ‘technical’ dive computer anyway? One that only comes in black?

No, no, no. That's a "Tactical" dive computer. Or an "Assault" computer.

They're the favorite computer of mall ninjas everywhere.

What happens in a recreational dive computer if you go past NDLs? Maybe nothing. Maybe a bad case of DCS. Maybe you die. It takes training and preparation to go beyond recreational limits intentionally, unless you really don't value your life or your ability to walk. I've treated a lot of dive injuries. A laissez-faire attitude toward depth/time and over-reliance on a computer will bite you in the butt if you don't understand gas planning, contingency plans, redundant gear/gas supply, or the basics of decompression.

I wrote this a few years ago while landlocked in Afghanistan, grumpy and experiencing hours of boredom punctuated by moments of stark terror. I give a talk based on it to dive clubs, public safety divers, dive physicians, or whomever will listen.
