Pastor is the rotating piece of pork you see at all the taqueiras. It is served on a tortilla with onions and pineapple. Cheese is additional, that makes it a gringa taco pastor. Delicious!!

Tacos al Pastor :D You need to order that before you leave!! It's one of my favs!

From Wiki:

Usually pork, it is marinated over one or two days with a blend of different chili peppers, spices and herbs (such as adobo), and then slowly cooked on a vertical rotisserie, often with a pineapple on top. When ready, the meat is then thinly sliced off the spit with a large knife. It can be served with small tortillas, onions, pineapple, cilantro and lime. It is also a common ingredient in tacos, burritos, and tortas.

OMG- SOUNDS YUMMMMMMMMMMMMYYYYYYYY!!!!!

Well, I can't please all the people all the time. I didn't go to dinner till after 9PM. I was dressed nicely and would have looked like melted butter by the time I walked there. Then I have that group from Arkansas who are amazed I am here by myself, giving me their two cents. (woman alone, dangerous, goodness gracious, my, oh, my etc. etc) So, taking a taxi worked out just fine. I am walking to town everyday at some point...even at night by golly. Anything else to critique?

Just be sure you have the hotel call a reputable taxi for you and that you have a phone number for a taxi company you can trust to call to take you back. Especially when you get to the mainland. There are many stories of American tourists being kidnapped by unregistered taxi drivers and taking them to ATMs and forcing them to withdraw money. Don't mean to be a downer on such a great upbeat thread - but just a word of caution.

On Cozumel, don't worry about it. I have never heard of a single case of anything remotely like that happening on the island.

Okay...that is what I had. It was seasoned pork with cilantro and lots of quartered lime, cheese and served on a crispy pizza size thinly rolled flour tortilla cooked to perfection. The pineapple on top was the finishing touch!

K-girl. Appreciate your concern. I have taken taxis many times this week and each person was nicer than the next. My taxi driver last night was so charming. I told him I was a scuba diver and he talked the whole time. His wife was riding in front along side him. Not sure she spoke English. But, he spoke incredible English. He talked about Colorado and how he has seen it on TV but never has seen snow in his whole life. He thought people who were divers were so lucky to view "a whole other world" He was very charming. In that short ride, he told me how many children and grandchildren they have. It was pretty darn precious.

Maybe you meant when I go to Playa Del Carmen by myself for the week...I should be a little more cautious?

Things are much different here. Cozumel is a very peaceful island and is much different than all other parts of Mexico in so many ways.

There is only ONE taxi "company" and they are lined up at each hotel and in various taxi ques along the waterfront. While they may be greedy at times, they are not kidnappers or violent criminals - and quite frankly - if they were to kidnap someone, getting them off island would be another issue in itself.

Did you know if you forward the right emails, Microsoft will send you a huge check...?

Okay, you did say Especially when you get to the mainland but it's still a silly myth. You're generally safer in the tourist areas of the peninsula than in many American cities, safer yet on Isla Cozumel. It's good to be cautious, but the true facts are important, please.

That said, yeah it is best to deal with bonafide taxi companies, establish fares in advance, etc. I use the calculator in my cell phone to convert between peso and dollars as I dicker. :crafty:

My husband, family and I have been using the Cozumel TAXI service for several years. I also know that I have not heard of any stories of problems with Cozumel Taxis or Taxi drivers kidnapping or violating tourists. In my experience and many other Cozumel travelers I know personally, I will say, for the record , that not at any time has there ever been a concern for personal safety. We have also on MANY occasions arranged round trip transportation for one fare, paid in full in advance and have ALWAYS had the cab driver return, on time as promised.

What they all said. Absolutely no safety concerns with taxi drivers or pretty much anyone else. I would never have purchased a second home on the island had I thought otherwise. Cozumel society is like a walk back to the times of Wally and the Beav.
