I do believe there would be less impact on the shore if steps or hand rails were installed! We have them at our Park at Catalina and they lessen the impact of divers entering and exiting everywhere! You could take 48" of shore and save the rest! 48" by 10ft of cement would not be bad for the environment or the divers!
You already have steps (or a ladder in the case of Oil Slick) to make it easier to get down to the water in many of the sites in the north and in the south, I can't believe divers walking on the beach have more impact than divers parking on the beach. Old Blue is a bit different in that there's a slight ledge or slope that must be navigated between truck parking and water entry. It's not difficult at all, until the coral rubble/sand gives way, and your boot sticks in place while the rest of your top-heavy self takes a fall. Spiral fracture to left fibula, took a plate and six screws to fix after we got home. The rest of the trip was, er, interesting. Bonaire isn't exactly ADA approved! (I had to promise, if we ever dive the site again, I'll carry her gear back and forth to the truck.)

I'd rather Bonaire get better wheelchair access before "fixing" the current dive site entries and legalizing something stronger than Advil and rum for people with really good medical reasons to be in pain would help too. Between BOPEC and sprawling Kralendijk and suburbs, there's enough development on that island already without pouring more cement over beautiful natural beaches.

who is to pay for this?? especially when due to weather and aging things have to be replaced. Then when someone slips on prepared surface because of slime who pays the fees from a lawsuit because of lack of maintence?
Better to leave access as it is and if someone is unable to do the entry then they can either make all their shore entries at the easier locations or off the resort properties that have easier shore access. There is always a boat that these people who feel uncomfortable doing shore entries that they can go on.It would not be a big obstacle as the boat costs on Bonaire are the least expensive anywhere.I am soon reaching an age that when I dive on Bonaire that I will be really considering that option :)

The park fees should pay for it! They should pay for security as well! Or the resorts association should! The liability can be released at orientation and dive liability release! It could be built with volunteers or the same way docks are done..... No liability if I slip of the dock! It would be better for all is all I am saying! Will it detour me from going or shore diving? NO! But who pays for the Airport? Well, I would pay 5.00 more to the park for entries mad safe!

Perhaps this thread will help you understand more. Good luck

... and with that statement, I leave this thread.

You have 0 proof to back up your statement that what the people who live on Bonaire "say" the police are doing and what the police are "actually" doing are two different matters entirely.

You have 0 proof of "there has been no resulting crime reduction..."
---

You HAVE proven what people on this thread are saying... No amount of information will be acceptable to you.

So, it is a useless thread for clearing things up about Bonaire, but is a very useful thread to quell hijack attempts from other Bonaire threads. I am glad I created it. Other than that, I am out of this thread as there are no more dead horses to beat and it is a great playground for someone to have a good time who doesn't want to believe the residents who actually live there. ;)

I am a 22 time traveler and diver to Bonaire. About my 5th time there, I left some dive gear outback overnight. Voila, in the morning it was gone. However, that did not stop us from going back. One must be viglient, especially shore diving, with anything left in the car.

One of the problems we hear most often, lately, is about breakins, while people are either asleep, or out of the room. I am a Bonaire Talk moderator, and we have many lively discussions about this topic on that site. In fact, there is one going on there right now. It is nothing new, and not a current phenomena. Like all islands in the Caribbean, and every major city and suburb here in the United States, crime is rampant. I do know for a fact that the Bonairean government, along with the police, are trying to make the island safer for divers who visit Again, there are devices you can bring with you to help ensure your safety. I know many people that do just that. Yes, it is sad that you must travel like that. However, like others here, I feel much safer on Bonaire than in my native city of Philadelphia.

Could you give the board a list of things you recommend divers should take with them when visiting Bonaire so they will not become victims of crime, regarding break- ins to their rooms when they are out, or sleeing in the next room and rental vehicles? thanks

I addressed this in another thread on the board! I agree 100%!!! http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/4999833-post10.html

Again, I can't say this more clearly than I already have, you don't hear this level of crime against rental vehicles and condo break-ins on any other island in the Caribe?

So Bonaire has some petty crime and car break ins

Read about beutiful crime free Antigua. Car and room break ins aren't on the top of the police list of things to do

Don't even get me started on St Thomas in the VI

Rumor has it that Diamond Head in Hawaii was named for all the glass from the car break ins. When the sun hits it at a certain angle it looks like a sparkling diamond out at sea.
