I adore my bp/w's, the one I made and destroyed, 15
or 18 something years ago, straight out of G G's book
and the back of my suit aluminum too thin and pointy

And one I bought about 10 yrs ago

And the 11lb one I bought last year

But sometimes a lot just for plonking around
you just want to leave the Red Bull air racer at
home and drive the 4 cyl stick shift and pass all
the Ferrari V8's people at the next set of red lights

Much like going up the stairs and down the stairs at the same time
peacefully getting back to where you started without actually going
anywhere, certainly not at a 45o angle pushing all those extra kilo's
of agonisingly pressurised water ahead of you 45o geography or not

Escher would have made a good  simple uncomplicated
At least, he managed to extricate himself from his drawings

somehow

I received The Complete Escher for a birthday twenty years ago

What was she trying to tell me the gifter

Was there a message :idk: Halemano's sig. I like Halemano.

Spare a thought for what 70m on air feels like from this side of the eyeballs

I don't quite understand what you said, but I like it.

Ah, yes; do I argue or am I just asking questions? :idk:

And I like knowone!

They're not mutually exclusive...

Kind of seems like a new Vest BC diver who is in control of their body position underwater might be ahead of the curve compared to the new BP/W diver who has relinquished some body position control to the easier to be horizontally stable in BP/W. :idk:

In the vast majority of 3-D OW marine environments, where horizontal body position is not mandated by silting concerns, why would the use of something that prefers to be horizontal be considered an advantage? :coffee:

Because whether it's silty or not, getting out of horizontal trim while trying to swim means you have to push more water out of the way to move forward. Water's really heavy stuff, and moving more of it means working harder ... and the harder you work, the harder you breathe ... and the harder you breathe the faster your tank gets empty.

Pretty elementary stuff there ... want to stay down longer? Simple, don't work so hard. Why push any more water than you have to?

But that's not really a function of your BCD choice ... it's a technique issue. Maintaining good trim really isn't a valid reason to choose one BCD style over another.

Perhaps I should have typed those two sentences above as one paragraph. There is a train of thought going on that some seem unwilling to follow. For many vest BC divers, when swimming horizontally there is no problem staying horizontal. Perhaps a good question is "how much of the time is our path horizontal?" Even when hovering, many times I prefer to hover with my head 45 degree-ish lower than hips; sometimes also with right shoulder 45 degree-ish lower than left shoulder.

Let's look at the very first response to this thread, of course <snip>ing it to suit my current direction of thought;

I'll go.

When I first started working as DM I was still using my 2nd Hand Aqualung Wave JBCD. A fantastic BCD by the way, solid, bomb-proof, perfect for students!

....

If I ruled the world everyone would dive BP, and don't get me started on how much better DIN is!!

Some have chaffed at the fact that on some threads I have started, I have tried to keep them on the topics of the OP. Perhaps this thread, after over 10,000 views, and perhaps a couple hundred posts that make sporting competition of TOS violations, could evolve towards recommendations for beginning divers? :idk:

As with many, the wart's post above seems to show internal conflict; or infernal humor. :idk:

If something is perfect for students, what's the big deal with recommending it to beginning divers? :idk:

Are you sure? Can you provide a link to prove what you are saying?

An inquiry is any process that has the aim of augmenting knowledge, resolving doubt, or solving a problem. A theory of inquiry is an account of the various types of inquiry and a treatment of the ways that each type of inquiry achieves its aim.

I grew up in a $h!t kicking town, with lots of pickups. When the first "oil crisis" in the USA caused fuel prices to skyrocket, tailgates fell across the open range. Unfortunately, no one had slept in a Holiday Inn, and fuel efficiency did not increase! :coffee:

... the inference and logical fallacy being that backplates are only for being horizontal?

Like yourself, I like to take pictures. You'd be amazed at what I can do in a backplate ... including hanging completely inverted (in a drysuit) ... or whatever other position is needed to get the shot I want.

Positional stability has little to do with choice of BCD style ... and everything to do with buoyancy control and weight distribution.

I love the Ford and Chevy arguments
... Toyotas eat them both for breakfast ... :D
