Hi Guys,

Any users with NGC? Is it a monitor and computer already. What are the benefits to add an additional shearwater Petrel or Nerd? Since the cost will be added up to other rebreathers tier.

If I buy as my first rebreather, will you choose Standard or Expedition (how long of the scrubber duration for each? I can't quite fine the answer for warm water...) version?

Cheers.

I've been using a Triton since 2018.
I still haven't upgraded to the NGC.
And I don't think I will, Monox + Petrel with a Teric as backup are fine.

NGC is a monitor that will turn into a monitor+computer once the upgrade is up and running.
NGC also incorporates a checklist and watchlist to verify that the machine is OK.
And a new head up display, bi-directional

Standard Triton: scrubber 2.2kg, approx. 4h use in cold and dark lake
Expedition Triton: scrubber 3kg, approx. 6h use
=> 500gr / hour

I use a Monox with the Petrel 3. I dont really like the Monox, but got used to it. The standard scrubber is fine for me, i do around 5 hour dive in 4 - 10°C water with it and had not problems so far. So scubber-wise i would stick with the normal one.

I wouldn´t pay for an other pO2 monitor, but if i had the chance to get the ngc instead of the monox, i would do that.

I upgraded to the NGC from a Monox (+Petrel 3) earlier this year (after some waiting). Unfortunately the NGC is not yet fully functional and is as of today still NOT a working decompression computer. This functionality has been promised for months now and is still not available. I was NOT aware of this when I upgraded and I don't think this was mentioned in the M3S promo material so this was a bit of a let down.

The English User Interface is full of silly spelling mistakes and the screen layout is such that some options disappear from the bottom of the screen. This is not obvious and can lead to confusion.

The 'computer' part of the NGC is integrated in the cell holder. So not in the bit strapped on your wrist. This is a display unit.

I could write a few pages on what I do not like about the NGC.

The HUD is ok, apart from the HUD mount, they dropped the simple O-ring mount, it is now screwed on in its place but that means screwing and unscrewing with each build. Irritating.

The battery is external to the display unit and the double battery holder is a real brick. Admittedly there is a lot of space in the bag with the counterlungs but this thing is huge. And heavy. Yes it has 2 batteries... The battery cell caps only have one o-ring though.

The Monox had its problems and the Monox HUD often blew an LED. But as of this moment the expensive upgrade will give you little more than the Monox functionality.

There is one feature that is cool. As the pressure sensor is integrated in the head the NGC can measure pressure differences IN the counterlung. This allows you to see the mbar variations when performing positive and negative tests. The only problem is that this is rather (temperature) sensitive. Don't do your negative tests in the sunshine!

If I had known what I know now I would have gone another route (non M3S). I was not happy with the Monox as a product Issues with charging, broken leds on the HUD (allegedly due to a bad electronics design) and a box that was designed in the 70's... But the NGC for me is not the answer. However I am stuck with it now and waiting (still waiting) for an app, Bluetooth connection and the actual deco computer upgrade.

Not sure in how far I will actually trust that deco stuff though... I will predominantly dive my Petrel3.

Sorry to hear the NGC had so many issues...
Years ago I had Narked at 90 upgrade my Triton head to be both standard molex connectors and have two 4pin AK connectors, so I can simply dive any computers with 4pin AK connections (my personal preference to run one Petrel and one NERD and enjoy easy upgrade path for computers but with the 4pin AK connectors have tons freedom now and in future regarding computer combinations...)
I felt/feel Triton makes an absolutely awesome CCR in all ways other than their computer and there's a reason so many CCR divers use Shearwaters (and also a reason that car companies buy tires for the cars they make from tire companies...).

Problem with having the Triton upgraded/modified this way is you loose the CE certification. When leaving outside the EU, no problem, but otherwise : you're not allowed to dive your rig if you require the services of a local operator.

Heard also that M3S don't to have anything to do with your reb any longer, not even maintenance, unless they get rid of the mods they don't approve of. Don't know if it's fact or rumor though.

100% agree on if you are in a situation that requires CE certification.
It would make sense that M3S wouldn't want to be the one that "touched it last" or ever "agreed with" it being changed from "as approved" from a liability standpoint (and even if their computer has issues I have no doubt they put A LOT of work into it, so it's prerty natural to be attached to their own computer...). With that said though, one of the really great things I love about the Triton is the degree of truly refined simplicity they achieved: I feel it is pretty straightforward to personally replace the galvanic cells and just about anything that may be a problem can be purchased from M3S and replaced individually (ie the head is really the main thing that can't be ordered from M3S, and if mine had an issue I wouldn't hesitate to have it worked on by Narked at 90 again and replacing the M3S valve orifice is something that should be within the abilities of a local dive shop after ordering the orifice from M3S [but I am considering a Fathom needle valve as upgrade to CMF, obviously no warranties expressed or implied on if needle valve would make for an even more optimal Triton configuration...].

Also regarding original poster's question of choosing the Standard or Expedition for first rebreather, they only had one option when I bought mine but pretty sure the only real difference is the amount of sorb and assuming the bag is the same size (please double check if I am correct on that assumption...). If so you can always buy the larger canister later (and pragmatically speaking it's worth considering the extra stack time on the Expedition only really matters IF your instructor/dive buddies have similar stack times...).
