The very good wines in the Côtes du Rhône are the Côtes Rôties ( expensive, about 100€ a bottle), the Chateauneuf du Pape, also very strong and very good ( about 20 - 50€).
You could also try the Gigondas or the Vaqueyras, much more simple, but good quality usually.
The best is to go on like in Sideways : you taste them and you buy them if you like them.
If you go by the sea, try the whites near Cassis , or the reds near Bandol.
