Tips for removing a stuck diaphragm cap?

Sorry for cross-posting from the HOG forum, but I suppose this is not really HOG-specific, and I might have more luck here... the diaphragm retaining cap on my D3 is surprisingly hard to turn, I do not remember it being so stuck earlier, and during the class we made a point of not over-tightening things to facilitate subsequent removal. What are the tricks to make removal easier? I worked it through a piece of cloth with an approved pin spanner (Armstrong 34-351), first by hand, then in a vise, it refused to yield to my attempts, and I just ended up with a mark in the chrome finish.
