You got it...I've have had my "buddy" for 35 years. Diving for less...

My lovely bride and I celebrated 30 years last November in Hawaii - or should I say under Hawaii!

The term 'buddy' sucks IMO; it has an associated 'good ole boy' connotation that is sexist and demeaning. It may work with describing adolescent boys' friends, but it should end there.

Suggest beginning to use the term 'partner' and see if the 'buddy' relic can be swept into the dust bin.

bud·dy:...
1. A good friend; a comrade.
2. A partner, especially one of a pair or team associated under the buddy system.
3. Friend or comrade; chum. Used as a form of familiar address, especially for a man or boy: Watch it, buddy.
intr.v. bud·died, bud·dy·ing, bud·dies
To associate as a buddy or buddies: buddied around with the older guys.
Phrasal Verb:
buddy up
To ingratiate oneself, as by presuming friendship: buddied up to the coach in hopes of making the team.

QUOTE: 1850, Amer.Eng., possibly an alteration of brother, or from Brit. colloquial butty "companion" (1802), itself perhaps a variant of booty in booty fellow "confederate who shares plunder" (1530). But butty, meaning "work-mate," also was a localized dialect word in England and Wales, attested since 18c., and long associated with coal miners.

Etymology: 19c: perhaps from the dialect word butty a companion, or a childish alteration of brother. http://www.allwords.com/word-buddy.html

I may be the only one disliking the term 'buddy'.

In CB jargon, 'good buddy' came to have an insulting connotation.

If two men square off to fight, it's not uncommon for the verbal twaddle to contain, "Ok buddy, whatcha goin' to do about it?"

Dive Partner is a more accurate description, and does not connote "good ole boy", "adolescent male chum", or other derogatory or overly familiar implications.

On a dive you are adults partnering in the pursuit of safety.

As an adult I have partners, my three year old son has buddies.

I wonder who, or what, first coined the 'buddy' term for SCUBA?

May he rot in Hell.:mooner:
