I would be open to hearing more about when you are diving as a group. I continue to look for new and different experiences, including muck diving:crafty:

All you have to do is visit this forum. We're pretty good about posting our gatherings here. I'm usually at Lake Pleasant on the last weekend of the month. This month and next I'll be there the 3rd weekend of the month due to the holidays. There are usually a few people that head out to dive with us. In fact, last weekend, 12 of us headed out to the Old Waddell Dam and did a couple of dives on it.

Gee I wonder why Paul who has spent his whole 32 Years Teaching safe Scuba and only cares about the students not the profit...

Who is this Paul you speak of... for he should fashion a table from oak, round in perimeter, and summon forth only those of highest moral fiber and lead them forth to do battle with those of lesser quality who dare to train the innocent on weekends, beneath the dangerous waves of our local lakes.

Hey... scubapig 52

Are you... "The Jimmy"?

I see no problems with Lake Pleasant. I did my rescue diver training there, my divemaster internship there, my IDC there, my IE there, and have certified many there. I would rather certify new divers at a local place that they are likely to dive to keep up their skills and enjoyment than take them somewhere where they may only visit once a year. One reason students don't continue on with their education is their inability to get time off work or afford the travel required to only dive pristine conditions.

Lake Pleasant has some fun and interesting dives. It's a wonderful place to have fun, enjoy diving, and hone navigation and buoyancy skills. I'd rather certify a student in the lake any day and then have them dive off Maui than have a student certified in Maui dive the lake. Train in conditions that require mastery of skills (such as compass use and buoyancy), and diving in 100+ foot visibility just becomes that much more enjoyable.

As far as Scuba Sciences, I went there once, was told I would need to spend at least $1500 for a camera to take pictures underwater on my vacation despite my telling the sales person I had just spent $3500 on a trip to Jamaica and couldn't afford that, was told no other option would produce results I would possibly want.... I left bummed out. But, I didn't take the advice, did further research, won two awards for a photograph I took while in Jamaica (using photography equipment that cost less), and never went to that store again.

Is it because you don't think we run a safe, solid diving course or is it because you don't want to loose a student to a direct competitor.

I think you've hit upon it right there. No business wants to lose a student to a competitor. After all, that's lost income (immediate AND future). So it's not the fact that SS doesn't want to lose their customers, it's the method by which they keep their customers

Most shops in any industry I know reward their steady customers, be it reward points, sales, etc. The LDS is a special case, where you might get priority service on a regulator 2 days before you go on your big trip, or a good "unadvertised" deal on a bundle of equipment.

Scuba Sciences, on the other hand, seems to use intimidation and fear to keep customers around. The idea of raising one company by putting down others, especially in this industry, isn't right in my book.

It's not the 'no lake diving' rule, nor is it not the attempt to keep customers that puts a bad taste in my mouth. What turns me off is, by proclaiming all other AZ dive operations unsafe in an attempt to "scare" customers into staying (rather than letting divers freely "choose" SS for its stellar operation or good service), SS is inadvertently saying that the shop has never made a mistake, nor will there ever *be* a mistake. The assumptive claim that SS is the safest shop in the world and Everywhere Else is Dangerous, when surely they must know there are other shops which are every bit as safe, is pompous and misleading.

There is a saying in Japanese, which translated means "even monkeys fall from trees". I wonder what may happen should there ever be an emergency in the "safe" ocean, and another inexperienced diver innocently says that they "thought SS was the only safe operation, so how could this have happened in the safe ocean?"

What makes me smile is that should there ever be an emergency with an SS operation, and there would so "happen" to be another AZ diving party nearby who were the only people who could help, I'll bet you anything they would, and could. Even though the helping party was trained by an "unsafe" dive shop.

I've learned it's important to not burn bridges in any line of work, and even in setting up a business, it's important to form cordial relationships with your competition. SS's dive shop, though, has a moat around it. With fire-breathing dragons and pirahnas which only eat other LDS owners.

Scary...
