I'm thinking of joining a group to dive GC, staying at the Sunset House for 4 days/5 nights next April. Was wondering what the general consensus is about diving on sites where they would take us? I've read where some of the reefs are getting bleached (down around the Sunset House)... less fish, northwest area is better, etc.

And how crowded are their boats?

Also, because lunch and dinner are not included, what is your fav restaurant that serves good food but is inexpensive? Average lunch cost? Average dinner cost?

The better diving is north of there IMO. Sunset House likely dives as far north as NW Point since they're south of Georgetown - there's good dives in that area - Trinity Caves, Big Tunnel, Orange Canyon etc. Blackie's Hole is a good dive near Sunset House. Look at the moored diving locations list on SH's website - they likely dive sites listed under West Side. The others are too long a trip since they likely need their boat back for the afternoon dives, Kittiwake, Stingray City or their cert/discover dives. Many operators work the same.

Inexpensive good lunches are at My Bar at Sunset House - we go there just for that. A short walk/drive to Georgetown for a Hard Rock, Margaritaville and a few local options. For lunch the US fast food chains are there also - BK, Wendys, etc. It's better if you go when you don't see the cruise ships moored offshore.

Cayman restaurant guide - many list menus with prices: Grand Cayman Restaurants Guide for Cayman Islands Restaurants Since the CI$ is .80 to the US$ everything costs 20% more. Where it gets expensive is fine dining on the waterfront - esp. at some of the nicer resorts.

IDK if it matters to you but Sunset House is in the flightpath. Departures are still low when they fly over. There aren't a lot but the first one is startling...

We stayed at Sunset House last December. I don't know a lot about diving the west side because a storm blew in and there was no diving on the west side. Sunset House put us in vans and drove us to the south side for diving. The weather cleared up and we did get to dive the Kittiwake. We also went to Stingray City but it was pretty rough that day. The shore dive is supposedly good but the weather kept it closed until the last day we were able to dive. I didn't dive there but several of the people in our group did and said it was a really fun dive. I never felt crowded on the boat, the boats are bigger slower boats but quite comfortable.

My Bar is a great place for lunch. The breakfast at Sunset House is good. We had a couple of really good dinners while there but as been said before they were pretty spendy.

In my opinion, best diving is North Wall and East End. Look into Cobalt Coast or Compass Point. I've stayed at each twice and would return to either.

Good diving, Craig

Thanks for all your replies... Very helpful.

Basically I was offered a seat to the Sunset House with a group for $1625, incl air, oceanview room, 2 boat dives/day, a trip to Kittywake wreck, unlimited shore diving & breakfast. I like the unlimited shore diving. Means I can do some night diving when I want.

If you plan to do it anywhere but SH you'll have to rent tanks at Eden Rock downtown:  Cayman Scuba Equipment Rental - since SH's policy is:
No Tanks or Gear Permitted Off Property.
Sorry, some bad renters have forced us to take this action!

Is it true that the Sunset House uses 72cu ft tanks instead of 80's? If so, why?

When we were there they used 72s. Why I do not know.

Don't know when you're planning on coming down. But right now, the shore diving isn't happening. Water's too rough. I didn't check Sunset House, but Don Fosters, Eden Rock, and the other shore diving around is shut down.

Sent from my phone, so typos are gonna happen.
