SPG or not

I’m not new to diving but I’m very new to dive computers and recently was suggested that in addition to my wrist mounted AI computer that I get a SPG too. Is this common and what’s the point? Why not a whole console?

Some people don't trust the technology and want an analog backup.
I prefer to just use the AI.
It is personal preference.

No wrong in doing either of the set ups. I use both, simply because its nice having a back up, but also see why some just use AI

I like just SPG (as a back up) because mine is very compact.

Had a discussion with my instructor wether AI alone is safe enough or not I believe they are enough in them self he believes you have to have a spg and a transmitter. Got my curious what a peoples preference and why

Thread 'SPG with AI computer?'

So I recently picked up a like-new Oceanic Atom 3.1 and transmitter, which looks like they've never even been used. Tested the air integration out on a tank at my local dive shop, and it seems to work fine. My wife and I will be further checking out all our scuba equipment in their pool prior to upcoming trips to Cozumel & Bayahibe.

I still feel like I need to have my SPG with me as a back up. (It's just an Oceanic swiv, no console)

Am I overdoing it, or is the redundancy standard-operating-procedure?

I've had my an AI Shearwater computer, for a few years now (I'm knocking on wood), but have not really had any issues and am really considering ditching my SPG. I really like a very minimalistic kit and would love to get rid of it. How many Shearwater users have ditched the SPG?

So in the past 4 years I've I started to come out of the "old ways" and try new gear and it has been paying off. Now it's the air pressure's turn and I was wondering what divers, especially technical, think in general about the new Air Integration Technology (AI). I know it's not treally "new". Anyway, I still use a 20 year old well maintained Seavue SPG that my father handed down to me (and then he went on to buy a shiny new Apeks SPG) . Hi all,

I've been working on getting my first set of gear. I've recently been looking into getting my spg and computer. I'm a bit budget constrained and was planning on getting something like a low cost spg with a used computer like a cressi leonardo, mares puck pro, aqualung i200, etc. I realized that there are plenty of AI computers, such as the suunto cobra or oceanic pro plus models, used on eBay for low prices.

I like the idea of having AI features such as low pressure warnings, est. remaining time, etc.

I'm curious on everyone's opinions on these. Is it better or worse rely on...

During my recent trip to South Florida another diver's rig got my interest. This guy had his backup SPG configured in a way that I hadn't seen before.

If you carry a full size or slightly smaller SPG and clip it off somewhere on your BCD as a backup to your air integrated wireless dive computer, and/or to check your tank pressure pre-dive, then you may find this tip to be useful.

Replace your SPG with a mini SPG as per the photos below. They range in size from 3/4 to 1", slightly larger than a nickel. Route the SPG hose alongside your BCD inflator hose using zip ties to keep them...

Before AI, I didn't run 2 SPGs, and I still don't feel the need for a redundant pressure measurement today. I run just a transmitter with an SPG in the Save A Dive kit on the boat/shore.

So I sun a Cressi digi 2 as the back up nearly just as compact and a small spg. Simply that's because that was what I was using before I got the transmitter

I actually once had a dive shop insist that they won’t let me dive without SPG - I had to lift my SPG to their face and show them I always have both setup as standard configuration.
