A car forum I'm on has gotten around the "high post count does not necessarily mean you should listen to that person" issue by implementing a "points" system. Basically, post count stays, but if you answer a question with good information you can get 1-10 points for helping the person out. It's kinda complicated and I really don't like it, but I can see how it can help newbies out.

The rest of the story: A new member needs to accrue enough points to be allowed to award points to others. No more than 10 points can be given out in a day... Not sure of the other rules. Like I said, it's complicated and I still use the method described here by others -looking to see what the person's posted in the past. Besides, when I find forums I like, I'm usually on them enough to get to know who to listen to and who just likes hearing the sound of their own keyboard.

Is this thread about diving, or am I missing something? How about a straight reward/punishment system.

No it's not about diving - it's about posts counts! eyebrow

I'd much rather be diving than posting, but if I'm not diving, and I have time to sit around and think about diving, then I think I'd rather be posting, so hopefully all of the posting makes me forget that I wish I was diving.

Although I enjoy watching my post counter reach new heights, I try to do so with meaningful posts in meaningful threads as much as possible. I generally only welcome those who I know or who may be from my region. It is nice that there are many who welcome those who join, but I think it does elevate the post counts and water them down a bit. Same for most of the non-diving threads.

But then I voted that the post counts are just for fun and shouldn't be taken very seriously!

i have PROOF (proof, i tell you) that a high post count indicates a large
I.Q. and winsome personality

also, people with high post counts tend to be prettier and better adjusted
Oh yeah...?! :11:

Nope, post counts mean very little - but they do indicate whether the member is active or just a drop in type or lurker. I wouldn't want anyone to think I could help them with diving questions - that's why we have Inst badges - but I do want new members to know that I can help with the SB maze. My Sig often suggests that, but I have been warned more than once to never use more than 4 lines - including blank lines. :)

Another meaningful post by the good doctor. In an order of magnitude no less than his serious posts.
