I think people are taking about different things. You could surface and simply swim 20 or 30 yards to the boat with the reg in your mouth and it’s not a big deal. But swimming any distance breathing down a tank is silly. You could roll on to your back and breathe looking up at the sky but you’re going to have to turn to look where you’re going and every time you do you could get a mouthful of water in any kind of sea. A shore dive could have a number of interesting spots with a distance between them and the most efficient way to move between them is saving your air on the surface and swimming face down with a snorkel. I could reverse my car down the road but it wouldn’t be the best. I’ll put my snorkel in my pocket it’s just to handy to leave at home.

I don't know why, but I am always happy to see around here.
Couldn’t agree more, there’s nothing worse than swimming blind. I wouldn’t walk backwards either.

Remember the question was should I wear a snorkel.

Wearing a snorkel while diving produces zero benefits but does have some cons, for most the cons aren't bad but still present.

That's why I say if your not diving long hose and you want to it's personal preference. But wearing it does no good. I usually tell people get a roll up if you want to carry one, no downside besides a little bit of space in your pocket to one of those.

Only on SB we can have a 13 page argument over wearing a snorkel or not and this is not the first time? If you feel there is benefit in wearing one go for it if not then don't shouldn't be shamed either way.
I still stand be my comment from 2.5 years ago on this thread. The only thing that has changed is we are 42 pages in.

Maybe the OP could clarify if she was talking about using a snorkel or leaving it attached to her mask, personally I’ve never attached a snorkel to my mask as I prefer it under the strap so I can adjust the angle.

She hasn't been on since November 2021, lol

As to the event you described, you were there and I wasn't, but I strongly doubt either of you would have drowned without your snorkels. But I'm not willing to say you are wrong, just that I doubt that either of you would have drowned. But as you say, it is really impossible to say.

Wow dude that's just rude! No, you were not there, you know nothing about the conditions or what gear we were diving, etc. etc. etc. You "strongly doubt" it? Why? Because you're not able to use a snorkel correctly and are unable to comprehend how they work? So you resort to insulting by implying that somebody is lying?

How many squalls have you ever surfaced in? Have you ever been in the water with no boat in sight with fifteen foot swells, whitecaps, sideways rain and continuous lightning? Now do it with no more canned air. We did a lot of purging on our snorkels and I "strongly doubt" that both of us would have survived that day without them!

Yea, I said I was not there. Nothing at all rude about it. You yourself said it’s impossible to know. I simply said I have my doubts. I never called you a lier and I NEVER insulted you! I think you absolutely believe one or both of you would have died. Having my doubts is not at all the same thing as calling you a lier.

Instead you become insulting. I can use a snorkel just fine. I simply have no need for one on scuba.

Yea, I’ve surfaced in squeals. I dive in FL all the time. I live here!!

We’ll agree to disagree. Keep diving with your snorkel. I really couldn’t care less.

I will call BS on this story.

Surfacing in swells, yes that is believable, Surfacing in rain storm yup I'll believe that.

Your stating that you had 15 foot swells with white caps, side ways rain and lighting. That is called a hurricane.

In those conditions your dive boat would be a one time submarine/ new wreck. No way you would have survived. Plus getting back on a boat would not have been possible. The only rescue in that situation that is possible is a coast guard rescue and even they would have a hard time of it.

Either don't elaborate so much or make up believable stories.

Call whatever you want. It makes no difference to me. Yeah I said they were fifteen foot but they may have only been fourteen foot. It's hard to tell from that perspective. Try reading the post next time. I never said we got back on the boat during the squall. I said it blew past and the boat came back looking for us blowing the horn. And no, a squall is not a hurricane but you might think it was if you're in one! They can can get pretty violent over open water.
