Picture yourself diving in some exotic place, you do your dives and go back to the shop with their equiment .
they take the equipment from your hands ,and all they do to it is dunk it in the community tank and hang it to dry.
this happened to me and i made up my mind that i would never let it happen again.
In resorts there are people from all over the world diving and using that same rental gear,Yuk!
The only other mouth that is going on to my mouth piece is my wifes.
Yes You Do Need Your Own REGULATOR!
O by the way when i got back i was sick, full of parasites.
dont know Where they come from, but if you traval be extra careful what goes into your mouth!

I did about 30 dives last first year when I was certified, and rented all my equipment. I actually recommend doing that, as it gives you some exposure and experience to different gear, and you can decide what you like in an informed manner.

That said, I think regulators are fairly bulletproof (knock on wood) in their simplicity. Yes, they should be maintained and serviced regularly, but listening to some of the people here, you'd think there's a 50% chance of a reg failing every time you rent. Take it all in perspective. If you plan to dive so little, you're definitely coming out ahead by renting for a while, since the economies aren't going to catch up to you as quickly as if you were diving every weekend.

If you do find yourself diving more, you can always reevaluate.

Personally, Id rather have my own reg than rent, for various reasons. Mainly, I know how my reg has been handled and maintained and whos been drooling in it (only me).
Also, since my gauges and computer is attached to the reg and im working with BAR/m and not PSI/feet its a bit more convenient for me than to rent imperial gauges..

I take it one step further though and always bring along in addition to my reg, my own BCD (its a "getting used to" piece of equipment), mask and fins..

I sure would if I were you. Not only will you have a clean, reliable reg that you can service at will but you can certainly find a quality easy breather for not much money. Make sure it is one that you can get parts for and have it regularly serviced. It is life support equipment so don't scrimp there. Rent everything else. It will be a push anyway.
