I've never really had an issue but then again only dove a used reg during OW, immeditaley bought my own and definitely feel the peace of mind knowing I've taken care of it.

You will read a lot of "rent, rent, rent" on this board. Baloney. Even if you don't dive much, buying is a good deal. Regulators have a decent resale value and tanks are even better. You can look them up on eBay, for example. If you take care of your reg and sell out when you are done with it, ownership is the way to go.

One more vote for buying your own. I bought my own reg under the assumption I would dive somewhat infrequently. I love it (diving) so much I want to do it whenever I possibly can and now I have my own reg.

That being said, I am of the opinion you don't have to go crazy and buy a really expensive one. There will be plenty of people that tell you not to trust your life to an inexpensive reg...Bollocks! No regs are manufactured to fail and kill you. Sure the expensive ones may breath a little better but only you can decide how much money that's actually worth to you.

Fellow instructor of mine decided to rent reg in bonaire (didnt want to carry it on the plane). The look on his face was priceless when we are on the boat hooking up gear and a roach crawled out of the second stage. Needless to say every breath he took for a week was an uncomfortable one.

You'll dive more if you own your own gear.

When I want to dive, I load the gear into the truck and go.
If I had to rent, I would have to drive 45 minutes to the shop, hope thay were open, give them money, then drive to the dive site.

Better to have the roach crawl out when you're hooking up gear than when you're breaking it down! :D

Very true. Gotta agree with you there. Sort of like finding half a worm in your apple. LOL!!

I've never had a rental regulator problem, but have had rental BC problems. I bought my own stuff after a couple of dives with rental equipment. I personally had my rental problems in Coz. Perhaps things would be better in other areas.

I suggest buying a middle of the road reg from a well known company, perhaps even on a clearance sale to save some $$.

Personally, it's not a question of $$$ .

Like I always say: " Diving with rental equipment, is like playing golf with rental equipment !! "

I have a made to mesure mouth piece. Very difficult to go back to original mouth piece !!!

And I know how and when my own reg was serviced !!!!

And worse; is the rental reg clean !!!!
