In addition to the Scubapro regulator mentioned above, you should consider the following two regulators from Zeagle:

1. Best choice: Onyx II Regulator - Zeagle

2. Envoy II Regulator - Zeagle

For the regulators you have, check with Sherwood to see if they still have parts for them.

My husband and I have been diving for the past 20 years, currently using our Sherwood Maximum regs/Sherwood octo from 2006. Our LDS says they are no longer servicable as some parts may not be obtainable due to their age (or a crap shoot if they start to service them and can't get parts).

@rsingler may be able to help you with that, I just buy the cheap ones and keep them running. There are some that have issues with parts, but I don't think that is one of them. I'm not in the business, and would buy a parts reg if regular channels didn't work.

The one I'm using now is from 2009, but have some running from the 1980's and one from the '70's it is fine but the second is an upstream and leaks but it's just to play with, put a '80's second on it and its fine.

The big question is what is wrong with your reg? If it's working, follow the reg check at the top of this thread. If it's running fine it doesn't need service. I ran a Sherwood Magnum as my primary reg for almost 20 years before it needed service.

I have own equipment but have been travelling lite regularly over last couple of yrs for scuba trip. Most budget airlines in SE Asia are charging high rate for check bag.
My body has been telling me to leave the heavy stuff at home. I need to find them a good home in 2-3 yrs time.

I am personally not a big fan of renting life support equipment. You never really know how well a rental reg has been maintained, but you are very aware of how you have maintained your own gear. If for no other reason, that would deter me from viewing rental regs as my first choice.

You mentioned the price of replacing your 20(ish) year old Maximus Regs with current ones. Sherwood regs have a reputation for being somewhat "bullet proof". What if you were to replace your current regs with a more economical line from Sherwood such as the Brut? Another cost effective option might be to look at Deep6 regs. They tend to be very highly regarded by those who use them.

Just thought that I'd mention those as options in case you hadn't considered them.

My first reg set was a set of used Sherwood's that were 20 yrs old when I bought them. I used them exclusively for the 1st couple years then switched to Oceanic, followed by HOG. Knowing what I know now, I should have continued using the Sherwood's and skipped the Oceanics!
Can still get parts for 30 yr old Brut regs. Can't get them for 15 yr Oceanics.
Contact another shop.

They have the kits for your regs and offer service.
Pretty hard to screw up 20 yr old Sherwoods during service. Simple piston regs that are easy to work on.
Send them to NESS and tell the shop trying to oversell you to pound sand.

I would say, good used regs from a reliable manufacturer, like ScubaPro. A lot of people get into diving, get talked into expensive kit and find out that it is not their passion. Good used gear is pretty widely available, just factor in the cost of service in when shopping. I have been using a reg that I bought a dozen years ago used (SP MK25/G260). I picked up my daughter's regs from the shop, also used and fully serviced.

Rental gear is only as good as the last diver that handled it. If they dragged it in the sands and then dropped a tank on it, you may not know until the hose blisters and the octopus starts to free flow.

Our LDS says they are no longer servicable as some parts may not be obtainable due to their age (or a crap shoot if they start to service them and can't get parts). We've been quoted $575CAD for the new Sherwood Maximum reg, and $390CAD for the Sherwood HP SR2 Octo (+ taxes)
So you have Sherwood Maximum (us?) regs and they want to sell you new Sherwood Maximum (us?) regs because parts for Sherwood Maximum (us?) regs may not be available from Sherwood.

Did I get that right?

I'd follow up with them to find out what has Sherwood changed between the Maximum (us) reg and the Maximum (us?) reg. (I don't know - but it would be worth it to call Sherwood and ask? And ask if the Sherwood shop can order the Sherwood parts from Sherwood to fix your Sherwood regs rather than buying new Sherwood regs? Or maybe Sherwood would also like to sell a couple of new reg sets so they'll form their answer accordingly?)

Yeah I think that's about right.
BTW, Mentioning Sherwood twelve times in your post helped me to not forget we're supposed to be talking about Sherwood regs.

Is that my cue to mention Mares?
