I'll rephrase (since I have nothing better to do): I've never been in a situation in diving where I came away saying, "wow, that was close!"
I don't dive conservative. I dive way beyond my training.
I've just dived enough to know that certification agencies spend the majority of their time scaring new divers.

Since I'm bored, I'll bite....what happened to your friend that did nothing wrong and had great gear and was severely disabled?

Research PFO and apply this to diving

... with as many divers that must have some form of one, you can see that not everyone that has one is going to get hurt by a long ways , but it does point out that some things are beyond your knowing about in advance

BTW . I'm not scared, and never had an "oh crap" moment, but I do know that I can't see into the future and $35 a year for a group that makes my diving safer + $70 for "just in case" ... is not a great sum of money

I'd still rather spend my $70 on a fills, fuel, VIP's, annual service, batteries, silicone, o-rings, ice, beer, ingredients for ceviche...

Sorry your friend was hurt.

Thanks
It's kinda personal and I'm really not trying to scare anyone .. For well trained, thinking divers , diving is relatively safe

Although .. $5.83 a month won't buy you much in the way dive gear or upkeep :)

I can easily afford DAN, I can't afford the result of an unforeseen accident. Diving is inherently dangerous, even though training prepares us, and the Ocean is unpredictable, especially in unfamiliar environs, such as on a trip. I'll pay my $9 a month, thank you.
That said, I can't speak for DAN UK, as that seems to be a different deal, so to the OP, research what it covers, and compare to what coverage you have.

I like short fast answers.

I had DAN. I travel and dive for a living, never even came close to needing it.

Don't have to worry about who I'd leave behind if I die.
Don't do deco diving.
Don't see a need.

I have met some former divers who are paralyzed from diving so it is more than who you leave behind is can also be about living and how well.

I too do not do deco diving, dive conservatively, rarely dive deep. That said, on a dive to 110 feet, 30 feet per minute assent, surface to surface 19 minutes, 3 minute safety stop - 3 chamber rides - DAN paid every penny.

Does it have to be DAN? No. But I like their funding of a free service where anyone can call with a question about dive related medical issues and their insurance has been good for me and their price is reasonable. Dan covers what other insurances (non-dive) don't if medically necessary such as bringing my family to me, or my body home, etc.

Wow!? :shocked2: Have you ever seen anyone leave a dive site in an ambulance? I have a few. One of them who had just purchased DAN insurance the day before online after seeing another guy leave that way. While two of the six I have seen leave would have died without DAN's TravelAssist & Dive Insurance - from shallow dives at that, the bigger risk is living with a dead spinal chord, etc.

Yes, you are both right. There's nothing wrong with being 'prepared' for unforeseen incidents. There are several factors seen and unforeseen in diving that can raise your risk of injury. The greater the number of factors, the more sense it makes to purchase insurance. My risk factors are low enough that I feel comfortable diving without insurance. It's called "acceptable level of risk".

I wrote a long post, but changed my mind ... just wanted to say that I think that your "acceptable level of risk" for not costing you $5.83 a month , is quite high
(and would remember that this is the Basic Scuba forum)
Edit: I realize now that dpwrkK5 has not said that he has no insurance, just that he does not have dive insurance

So, do you have other insurance that will pay for expensive & timely treatments in an emergency? If not, perhaps you'd like to leave a note in this thread http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/accidents-incidents/123910-if-i-should-die-while-diving.html saying that it's okay if you couldn't afford treatment to prevent your death or crippling disability with loss of bowel movement control should the need arise and not be met - just for future references....
