I called around today to get prices on having my wifes' Apeks ATX40 set up serviced. I expected it to be kind of pricy since its not under warranty. Most places I called that serviced Apeks equipment wanted $50-60 for labor and $50-55 for parts which is about what I had anticipated. However, one place I called wanted $105 for labor. I almost fell out of my chair when they told me that. I couldn't beleive they could actuall charge almost double what others wanted for labor and still be in business. I guess they have to pay for their new building some how. Now if only Mares would ship my new Abyss before we leave for Australia I wouldn't have to worry about it.

Sometimes that's a shop's way of saying "we don't want to do that".

Well the shop I called was an Authroized dealer so I am assuming they would be perfectly OK with servicing it.

Ask them if there is something that they are doing that the other shops are not. If you talk to them, they may give you a better deal to keep your business.

You know, when I first read this my gut reaction was rip-off. Then, I thought about the time and effort I put into cleaning and rebuilding my regs. Its not a difficult task but does take time, attention to detail, and some specialized tools. It's also best done when you would not be interupted or multitasking. Thinking what a fair market price for my labor would be, its not that far off or out of line. (well, depending on what value is placed on the tech's time and expierence plus overhead). Parts, well that's dictated by the manufacturer so its kinda fixed.

I thought Apeks had free parts for life as long as it was serviced every year.

Well sort of fiixed. I had one shop quote labor, free kit under warranty and $15 for o-rings not in the kit. That's a gazillion incidental orings.

To the OP... What shop do you want to entrust your wife's regulator to? Price and competence need not correlate.

I figure if the plumbedr who recently replaced the wax seal on my renter's toilet (for $500) can charge $90/hr for something that merely helps ensure sanitation, that a person who is repairing an important piece of life support equipment could as well. Fortunately the person doing my repairs is certified and only charges for parts.
