My experience is that driving/riding a car is by far the most dangerous thing you can do in Egypt. For instance there´s a widespread superstition regarding lights at night that compell egyptian drivers to drive with their lights off...until they are almost past you...which is when they switch on the full power of their headlights(!!!) ...

This is not exactly true.
I drive a car there but it takes a lot of skills as a driver. One more thing - for Americans - they don't have automatic there!!!!!! (well, they do but that's very, very rare).
They don't use the lights because according to Egyptians lights dazle them. So it has nothing to do with superstitions. High beam lights are used to great each other when passing.

What I meant writing that driving is not the best idea was that driving alone in the Egyptian interior without police escort can be dangerous

Well, I'm one American who has never owned an automatic-transmission car, and never will! (Though I admit they're handy in a traffic jam...)

I can kind of understand that... but what do they think their lights are there for?? I always assumed it was that old myth of "if I don't use my headlights, they won't burn out"... or "if I don't use my headlights, I won't use so much gasoline"...

I hadn't noticed that there... but OK, that's scary... and that doesn't dazzle them?? :06:
