I'm a Fish!
I'm right now in Durham, NC awaiting eargerly the dive expo which starts tomorrow. I've got my trusty digital camera and will be glad to share pics with other SBer's later. If curious the website is WWW.seas-expo.com . If anyone is in the area and would like to show me and gf around town be glad to pm me. might reply. But it will be great if I get to meet the deepsea detectives. definitly getting a pic with them if possible.

What more can i say. I'll be surrounded by people involved in diving, and not just a dive shop local.

Just got back in town and I will say I had an absolute blast. My girlfriend and I have never been to something like this. IF ANY of my fellow SB'ers have thought about goin to a show, trust me it's a blast. I'll try and give some insight into the event and my point of view as a spectator. If anyone who was fellow attendee chime in and give an alternate view. If you're a speaker or anyone else who I met, Thank you .
Just a bit of a report of my views, I'll try breaking it up so it'll be easier to read.
The best part was just knowing that you're surrounded by people who love diving. Not a huge event but still was worth the money it took to get me there and all.
Bit of background for the event. It was located in Durham, NC which is where Duke U. is located. The event was in the marriot civic center and It spilled over into a local arts building and YMCA. The local YMCA was offering a chance for those who wanted to experience SCUBA for the first time.
One thing that surprised me was the amount of diving celebrities that people would recognize. One of the main attractions was Richie Kohler and John Chatterton aka. the Deep Sea Detectives off the history channel. Two men who when talking with you could tell the devotion that they had to the sport in their manerisms. They had seminars which were in a laid back environment. The first of their presentations was on dive portal which shows the duo in adventures of their own making. The chosen piece shown was scalloping off Maine in February, which me and my gf had to go find seafood afterwards.
The second was about their very recent trip to film the britanic, the sister ship to the titanic. A combination of the history of the vessel and some raw footage was presented. Also an insight about their travels and ordeals of getting the footage was discussed.

Rick Allen was a gentleman associated with the proving of a wreck off the coast of N.C. with alot of history.... Blackbeard's Queen Anne's Revenge, the flagship of a pirate celebrated in legend. Rick presented everyone with photographs and vivid descriptions of the wreck believed to the the QAR and underwater archeology. It's amazing how much history can be found in less than 30' of water (if memory serves me correct). extra information can be obtained at www.QARonline.com

This morning (sunday) my girlfriend and I were drawn into different directions. I was curious about a lecture by a gentleman I met in the Dive-Rite booth, Pete Nawrocky, and my girlfriend was interested in the lecture about the Galapagos ocean lab given by John Morrison. I'll give info about the one my gf attended as I get it from her. But Pete Nawrocky's presentation was entitled It's all about the toys. This was a slide show presentation addressing the changes in gear and configurations and the progression of "TECH" diving. Not alot of people since it was 11:30 in the morning after football saturday. But of the small group it seemed that everyone knew each other and I was just as welcome since just the day before I had talked with Pete about the Dive-Rite gear. Yet another presentation that was well done.

OH I forgot to mention something. So far I've told you about some seminars. Let's break this down to a $$$ money situation. The admission to this event and the parking was really surprising. $8 for admission and right across the street parking $2 all day long. I live in a college town and I've paid atleast half that before.
Now the exhibits and booths. You want to plan your trips to far off lands, there's these booths. Want to get your hands on new and might be released gear, there's even more booths. Everything from area diveshops, and charters to custom dive gear, dive-rite, DAN and others. There was a lady who makes doo-rags and other items for divers. I liked em so much I couldn't stand to leave without buying a rag for myself.
There were people checking out the scene such as Greg the divemaster off of "ScubaRadio" and Ceo. of DAN DAn Orr. Both of these gentlemen were laid back, easy to approach and eager to strike up a conversation. There was also a silent auction with items from scuba hides to ceramic decorations to dive gear. All donated and all the money going for the local YMCA. I got a few goodies.

I am planning on going back next year.

I was there.
I entered three photos in the underwater photo contest and all three won something. A second and third in macro (beaten by a photographer I was proud to compete with), and a third in the General catagory. This was my first time competing as I am usually too lazy to concider it. Two of the judges were Richie and John. NICE!!

yeah the two that won were a macro of a small star fish and a sting ray .... all of the shots were really nice. which ones were yours?

Glad you had such a great time, thanks for the report! You should head to "Our World Underwater" in Chicago in February if you don't want to wait a year to experience the fun of one of these shows. We went last year and really enjoyed it, NetDoc was even there with a Scubaboard booth! I had a chance to get several autographs from famous dive people including Richie and John who were doing a book signing. They are the nicest guys that's for sure!

There was even a Scubaboard get-together at one of the bar/restaurants. It was fun getting to put faces with the names I had gotten to know here.

Hubby and I bought a few things too--can't resist those gear booths!

well that would fall in the 8 hours of driving area...
it took 5 1/2 driving gf's car that got around 35 mpg and no stopping for anything. don't know about that one.
