For starters...lil bro' didn't check his gear properly before entering the water, therefore he didn't realize that I had made the change in configuration on the rig. He admits that was valuable lesson, by the time he realized it wasn't how he'd left it he was trying to catch up to his buddies in a low vis quarry. And one of you were right about the exhaust being upside down.He complained about that considerably(it is not side exhaust). I don't have any photos and can't quite even get a pic in my mind of how he managed it. When I first used the gear I turned it upside down on the tank in order to make it fit as I was instructed, that did work , but was quite uncomfortable. Complaining about the akwardness of the hoses caused my instructor to realize the configuration was wrong and then correct it. At this point I hope he will have some conversation with his instructor on the matter. He has been out of the water too long anyway which was why I could use his gear. He got OW cert and stayed dry for a year...I got OW cert a year ago and haven't been dry since!

We're headed for a trip to Jamaica soon, I hope the DM can be of some help to him. It will be his first Blue Water dive.
I can't wait!!

Before I went 'Long hose' I always had my octo on the left. It is much easier to share with a buddy. If they are facing you then the hose entry is on their right (your left). If you are side by side then the hose goes straight from your tank to your buddies right hand side. If you need to use it then it comes under you ars (as stored) accross you chest and bends to have a right hand entry. Is there any good reason to have the octo the right of the tank?

My primary is on the right, but my octo is on the left for the reasons listed above. It's not how my OW instructor had it, but something I've seen since OW class....the only negative that I've been able to come up with, is that it's not where folks expect it to be (although it is in the triangle)...so I always make a point to show new folks I'm diving with.

Peace,
Cathie

I have never been diving with anyone with other than standard setup for recreational diving. Reg/Octo on the right, SPG/Inflator hose on the left. Not to say it will always be that way, but this is the configuration I have always seen and used.

Would like to share (not a pun). While doing a pool session last night for the SSI Stress and Rescue course one of the divers with us has his gear set up in what has been referred to as the "standard reg set up" . Training for buddy sharing air to ascend has to be done different, and is more awkward movement wise. However, we have a very good instructor who felt he should leave his set up that way and we should all learn how to deal with different set ups. In doing this we would be a more prepared diver.

We setup with our octo over the left bring it across the front and put in front clipped to the front of our BC on the right thus forming a triangle. I can pick it up and out of the keeper and hold it out to share with the other diver directly in front where I can face them and have direct eye contact. With his set up he has to be more to my side not as direct. But not really a problem as I see it. We all did well with these skills and set up.

Also, NSADs was first to use an octo and they originated this octo over the left set up. SSI has merged with NSADS and has kept this configuration as well as other parts of their training.

Seaangel, with this configuration which side is your regulator on?
