Yeah, well one of the things that I like about Jamrock.
Besides the lyrics which tell a lot of sad truth about life in the ghettos of the Kingston, is the impossibly heavy beat.

Heavy like turn up the stereo so loud, the bass revertebrates in your chest, heavy like it consumes the thoughts in your mind, heavy like you'd stand beside the 9 foot tall speaker at a party to "feel" the music.

Hehe, heavy like that :D.

Well yes, I understand your point on the background tracks.
Anyway Ele/ Elephant Man/ the energy god, is known locally among other things for being prolific when it comes to releasing songs, i'm talking a couple new songs a week.

Some are ok, a few are good and a lot are downright crap.

Jamdiver:
I know what you mean, that's why I download 'liberally' hehe.
Nice jeep, looks quite Scuba friendly :).

Have to put this out there, growing up in the 80's here as a small child, I distincly remember watching the "Iron, lion, Zion" video by Bob, I loooved it so much.
Was mindblowing to me at the time :14:.
Like many other American kids, my intro to Reggae was listening to Marley's LEGEND in High school. A buddy of mine named Francesco was the son of an Italian diplomat, and was a "Dormie" at my school. He turned me onto Marley. We'd sit in his dorm room, listening to Bob, catching a buzz..... Those days are gone, but it's a great memory. He gave me a gift I still teasure today. I love the music. It doesn't matter how bad your day goes, turn it on and feel the stress and anger melt away.

Thanks for all the reggae thoughts and links. Looks like a lot of choices to make.
Irie.

Bob Marley's "Legend" is a great CD, and for some odd reason I like Shaggy even though it is more rap than reggae to me. Buffet is another I listen to a lot.

However, my fav is the Barefootman. I like the twist he puts on a lot of the songs. "Weird Al" of the Caribbean more or less. I especially like his Scuba Do CD.

Like a lot of white kids in the 1970s, my first intro to reggae was Eric Clapton covering "I Shot the Sheriff." As much as I liked that, I liked the original even more.

And for some Canadian content, try to find music by the Reggae Cowboys.

WAIT WAIT WAIT

at 51? and no dope? Then forget most suggestions on this board as they will probably not appeal to your tastes. As for starting a reggae collection on the cd Legend that is a serious in justice that I cannot in good conscience let fly.

EDIT: No offense but Bounty and Ele and Sizzla and everyone else in modern reggae are not going to appeal to him, strike that he might like Beres Hammond, Sanchez and/or Glen Washington. (General sweeping guesses here, but me thinks I know what he is looking for)

Definitely need to be starting with older more mellow reggae vibe. People like black uhuru and abyssians and such would more than likely go straight over your head, and I have noticed in my time in america if the people like toots and dekker and such, they will more than likely classify that under the ska umbrella. If that is what you want you couldn't go wrong with most of the prominent singers like Jimmy Cliff, Desmond Dekker or Toots and the maytals.

If you are looking for reggae I think I have you pegged. If I were you I would avoid legend on a whole(The biggest injustice by a greatest hits cd to a music career ever) If you are looking to delve into Bob Marley seriously instead of dabbling start with Burnin' and work your way through chronologically, this has the advantage of you seeing the evolution of Bob's work and styles, as his style changed during his career. If you want to dabble in Marley may I just suggest you go for the Box set at $40 (half of what I paid for it years back when it was first re-released).

Secondly, I would give you a heady dose of Steel Pulse to dabble with, start with either smash hits or rasta bicentennial (live cd - AWESOME). I also pegged you for the kind of person that would dig the whole UB40 Greatest Hits (I love it, and get a hard time in Trinidad because its so commercial) Dennis Brown and Gregory Isaacs are great musicians but are closer to the core of reggae. Start on the outside and work your way in.

So you are jumping into reggae? Why not get some video action? Try these movies The harder They Come, The Rockers (my personal favourite) and then Dancehall Queen. They are all low budget and kind of lame in the grand scheme of things. But no reggae fan cannot enjoy the first two and then dancehall queen will show you where reggae has gone since Bob.

Tell me what you decide to do, I have many and many and many and many more suggestions to help you out. Just let me know if I got you or if I missed you with my logic? My apologies, I get very excited spreading reggae to the masses. Just wish my friends up here would have taken my advice and convert to reggae. The movie of life is so much easier with a laid back soundtrack.

Gordo

Gordo nice advice. I would throw in some of the lover's rock like tanya stephens, etc. He'd probably like that too... Maybe the Skatalites too? Lee Perry?

You see the other discussion about reggae in general and dancehall... well... we could probably blame jamdiver... he's a known hijacker. :D

Listen here........, hehe.
It wasn't so much thread hijacking as turning the thread into something interesting, I mean who really cares about Beuchat... Really!!
Long live Formula one...

As to this discussion, hmmm listened to quite a bit of reggae today, was feeling for it.
I'd recommend Cecile to caribbean soul, she's sorta new but has some nice songs..

'Trini no feel no way, it's nice to spread the love'

Exodus......... movement of Jah People
Movement of Jah People......

BTW, Caribbean Soul, threads have a way of taking a life of their own on Scubaboard.
Watch and learn :D :D

Thanks again to everyone. Now how about some good steel drum music. Hey Gordo was steel drum invented on your island.

It was, only music instrument to be invented in the 20th century I believe.
It's also called "steel pan". Anyway Trini can give you some more info on this..

I don't want to steal his thunder :)
