The term "stony bottle" has it's orgins here.

See paragraph 3

ok so basically you made that up. Thank you for the info.

On personal note usually a bottle to extend a dive it s call a stage bottle. This is calculated in the gas planing and it s outside recreational diving. It does obviously need additional training that is not part of the open water course by any agencies.

A pony bottle in order hand is a redundant air source that we use only in case of emergency and it s not part of the dive planning. Once you leave the main air source and you go on the pony you abort the dive and go to the surface.

Does it make sense to you ? And well if f not i mean carry on the way you dive i am not here to change that i respect your "concepts".

I am enjoying it, very much. This year has been filled with adventure, local and abroad, to places including Egypt, Thailand, England, France and Micronesia (Truk Lagoon).

We just got back from Australia and in 3 weeks I'm headed back to the US for the first time since we moved here a year ago which was right after my last day of work. We spent this past year renovating our new villa and that's just about finished. The weather has been a bit cold, and being retired for a year I'm still not quite used to the downtime and how to fill it.

So here I am.

What’s the diving like in your part of Greece ?

The last time I dived there was off Lesbos, memorable only for a shore dive when some nudist swimmers 🧜‍♀️🧜‍♀️ came snorkelling around us to see what we were up to 😂🫣. rather than for the sea life.

The diving here in Grrece is "meh" at best but remember I'm the half empty glass guy. It consists mainly of volcanic rocky walls and ledges that end in a bare sandy bottom at around 30-70 feet that continue to slope downwards. Some colorful fish here and there, the occasional large schools of small dark fish, nothing big other than an occasional medium sized grouper. An occasional piece of colorful coral that seems out of place against the bare rock. The occasional moray eel in a crevice. There's one shipwreck near where I live that was a natural sinking with a fatality many years ago, it's got some interesting artifacts including a coral encrusted motorcycle but nothing like the Thistlegnorm.

I've dived on the mainland and the islands of Samos and Mykonos, they're all about the same although there were some interesting ruins, I've seen pottery and a cannon from the early civilizations.

Some of the islands including Naxos and Cyprus, as well as areas around Athens have shipwrecks, they're on the bucket list.

A two minute drive from my house puts me on the rocky shoreline, I've done some nice relaxing shallow dives in the 3-6 meter range, any deeper and it's just sand. The current takes me along the coast where I drift for 30 minutes to an hour then hop out in one of the spots that ladders have been placed, and I walk back to where I parked.

Bolty, you're quite the pot-stirrer today! Is it the fasting?

I'm just making sure that everyone is behaving, lol.

Fasting is OK. I can't dive; I'm just watching the sea in front of my house. There are three more weeks to go.

I admit there's a small part of me that hopes the term will get a grip and I'll leave it behind as part of my legacy.

Does it make sense to you ? .

Yes it makes perfect sense that a pony bottle is an emergency gas source and a stage bottle is used to extend a dive. I use my bottle for both purposes- it's a bailout bottle AND I occasionally use it as a dive extender, at which point its function as an emergency bailout is greatly reduced or eliminated because my remaining gas is split between the two tanks, both of which are in active use although not simultaneously.

Which is precisely why I refer to it as a stony bottle.

I plan my gas management in such a way that I always have at least as much reserve between both tanks as a single tank AL80 diver
Hopefully you mean, "in each tank".

I think he is saying a proper tourniquiet is far more beneficial (which I agree with) and easy to have on you rather than a shoe lace which could cause problems.
No doubt it’s better to have the best tool for the job but to understand why and with what is on hand is the more useful tool, you sometimes need to adapt to the situation without the best tool.
